The engineering drawing in the post below is an unusual steam-powered sugarcane mill that was built in the 1860s. It was documented as part of an interesting project almost 50 years ago. But I used an LLM to help find the file in the Library of Congress, so my brain is turning to lazy mush.

In one of his books, Brooks states that “there were really two civil rights movements”: Optimists and Realists. “The first was northern and highly educated… People in this camp tended to believe in conversation over confrontation, consensus over aggression, and civility over political force.”
In one of his books, Brooks states that “there were really two civil rights movements”: Optimists and Realists.

“The first was northern and highly educated… People in this camp tended to believe in conversation over confrontation, consensus over aggression, and civility over political force.”steady
achievement
of greater
prosperity,
a
steady
growth of
progressive legislation, and a gentle rise from barbarism to decency.
They believed that racism was such a clear violation of America's founding documents that the main job for the civil rights activist was to appeal to reason and the better angels of people's nature.
As
education
levels increased,
as
consciousness was raised, as prosperity and economic opportunity spread, then more and more people would gradually
see
that racism
was wrong, that
segregation was unjust, and they would rise to combat it. Education, prosperity, and social justice would rise together. All good things are compatible and
mutually reinforcing.
People in this camp tended to believe in conversation over confrontation, consensus over aggression, and civility over political force. There was a second camp, Chappell argues, that emerged from the biblical prophetic tradition. Its leaders, including King and Rustin, cited Jeremiah and Job.
In this world, they argued, the just suffer while the unjust prosper. Being right does not necessarily lead to being victorious. Man is a sinner at the core of his being. He will rationalize the injustices that benefit him. He will not give up his privileges even if you can persuade him they are unjust. Even people on the righteous side of a cause can be corrupted by their own righteousness,
can turn a selfless
movement into an instrument to serve their own vanity. They can be corrupted by whatever power they attain and corrupted by their own powerlessness.
Evil, King declared, is "rampant" in the universe. "Only the superficial optimist who refuses to face the realities of life fails to see this patent fact."29 People inthis realist camp, who were mostly southern and religious, had contempt for the northern faith in gradual natural progress.
"This particular sort of
optimism has been discredited by the brutal logic of events," King continued.
"Instead of assured progress in wisdom and decency, man faces the ever present possibility of swift relapse not merely to animalism, but into such calculated cruelty as no other animal can practice."
30
The optimists, members of this camp argued, practice idolatry. They worship man and not God, and when they do worship God it is a God who merely possesses human qualities in extreme form. As a result they overestimate the power of human goodwill, idealism, and compassion and their own noble
intentions. They are too easy on themselves, too complacent about their own virtue, and too naive about the resolve of their opponents.

By Friday, Demuth had put more distance between herself and the president's post, which some groups called an incitement to
violence. "President Trump doesn't speak for my campaign, and it's not language I would have used," she said in a statement to the
Minnesota Star Tribune. Republican U.S. Senate nominee Michele Tafoya also pushed back: "No, I do not think President Trump's post was helpful or

24 BELLS
In December 1914, a shell-shocked British field chaplain (Tom Hanks) is ordered to keep a church open through Christmas by staging a pageant for troops fraternising with the enemy. A widowed resistance singer (Kim Basinger) supplies costumes and insists German prisoners join the Nativity. A teenage deserter (Wil Wheaton) becomes the angel, while an army censor (Jeffrey Tambor) arrives to approve the spectacle. When the pageant draws trenches into the square, the chaplain must choose between preserving the truce and exposing the massacre at dawn.

The circuitous route to answer the straightforward question of “what is the revenue run rate” is wild.
The discrepancy arose from attempts by OpenAl's own investors to produce a direct comparison with Anthropic's annualised revenues, according to a person familiar with the matter. The pair calculate the figure in different ways, with Anthropic including the revenue from sales via cloud partners such as Amazon's AWS and Google Cloud, while OpenAl does not.
Investors' efforts to "gross up" OpenAI's annualised revenue prompted reports that the figure was around $40bn in July, said the person.
OpenAl later told its backers that its annualised revenues had jumped more than 70 per cent since July, leading investors to calculate the $70bn figure for September. However, the new investor presentation shows close to $30bn annualised revenues in July.

The Economist is opening the door to that scenario by introducing this to the wider world.
Effective altruism's second demand is to follow reason wherever it leads: considering evidence and odds explicitly, correcting for biases and banishing fear of social censure. This demand is associated with the rationalist community, effective altruism's arcane sister movement. (The boundaries between the two are porous and contested.) Eliezer Yudkowsky, an autodidact from an Orthodox Jewish family, who was blogging about Al in 1996 at the age of 17, is one of its fathers. His most influential texts are a series of blog posts of 1m-odd words, "The Sequences", which he followed with 660,000 words of philosophy-imbued fan fiction, "Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality".

My brief understanding is that while volumes are moving, it is now massively less logistically efficient than usual, and is driving up costs / causing issues further down the chain. More supply getting out, but the additional costs mean the net impact is overstated in terms of returning to normal.
The system relies on one set of tankers shuttling through the Strait of Hormuz, running the gauntlet past Iranian attacks, before transferring their cargoes to another group of ships waiting in the Gulf of Oman.
The increased flow of oil has eased pressure on benchmark oil prices, with Brent crude trading below $98 a barrel in London on Tuesday.
But the method was also "very inefficient", according to Hardy, since ships are tied up waiting for cargoes for several days or weeks at a time, reducing the pool of tankers available elsewhere.

Just another shift running the money factory. Q: Do you watch for contagion into credit markets? Is that the transmission mechanism we should be monitoring? Dimon: “Well, I think yes”... “So JPM, we have to be prepared for it. So if credit spreads gap out & rates go up, we're completely fine.”
You know, countries around the world are borrowing money, and I think we can't be complacent. And the lesson is, there will be a point where the market will ask for more and more and more, and yeah, at one point, they'll feed into corporate debt, corporate credit spreads and things like that, which is how it normally happens. But I've always said the best thing to do with any of these things is deal with it before it becomes a crisis.
If it becomes a crisis, we will deal with it, it just will be in a much less pleasant way.
Okay, I mean, there's some would argue that we're a long way from that in France in terms of avoiding a crisis, given where the politics stands, although Le Pen has given her budget details today. Do you watch for contagion into the credit markets? Is that the transmission mechanism that we should be monitoring?
Well, I think yes. I think what you have is all businesses should prepare for different outcomes. I think it's a mistake to say here's my forecast, I'm going to run my business according to that, because you should be prepared for a wider range of outcomes.
Intellectually, it's very good to think about it. You may think the odds of something are less than me or more than me, but I think there's a risk that inflation is sticky, that rates continue to go up. And so for corporations, whether you leverage or not, is when you have to refi or borrow money, are you prepared for higher credit spreads and stuff
So JPMorgan, we have to be prepared for it. So if credit spreads gap out and rates go up, we're completely fine. But the reason we run it that way is so we can continue to serve as our clients.
