Mammal mothers are tightly tethered to their young by the need to feed, but Shizuki Nara &co show that the Japanese house bat's mothering instinct declines over time and she is less inclined to retrieve a misplaced pup when cradling its siblings doi.org/10.1242/jeb....

The Russo bat lab has published a great paper on bats & farms! Absolutely all of this! Bat-friendly farming must also mitigate for any risks or hazards presented to bats. It's not simply "putting up bat boxes". Another banger from 2024! #BatFriendlyFarming 🦇🌎🧪🦊 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Graphical abstract of the paper - Russo, Danilo, et al. "To improve or not to improve? The dilemma of “bat-friendly” farmland potentially becoming an ecological trap." Agriculture, Ecosystems & Environment 375 (2024): 109215.

Highlights
•
Intensive agriculture harms bats via pesticides, infrastructures, and predators.
•
Bats make maladaptive habitat choices when restoration actions ignore such threats.
•
Enhancing conventional farmland for bats may turn it into a demographic sink.
•
Improvements should only be applied where threats are effectively mitigated.
