Happy start to the day - found out I reached the interview stage for a grant application where I tried two new things: 1) changing model systems 2) putting in a bunch of DAGS into the proposal to clarify the general expectations. 1/2

I realised I have a strange job as I heard myself telling my 3 yo that I've spent the past few weeks making virtual bats and porpoises aim their sound emissions at different directions...and that I'm currently trying to see how to figure out where they are aiming their sounds using computers

If you've used my drawn statement on Ai for a class or other Ed context – I'd appreciate learning a bit about that (here or directly), I'd like to document a bit of where it's ended up. And if it's new to you, feel free to make use of it, all online here! Tnx! spinweaveandcut.com/fall-2025-sy...
my statement on Ai from the mini-comic I'm making as syllabus for a new class I'm teaching this fall. It's simple, but I pretty much said all I have to say on it - it robs you of decisions and struggle - and the joy of being surprised. It robs you of learning...

a snippet of a mini-comic, at top - straight line stretches from point A to B. Immediately below, same dot at A, then becomes a curving, meandering line that winds through the page and ends at a point with rays and a question mark emanating from it. Text reads: "Nothing can do this for you - for that robs you of experience and conflates answers with learning. Rather, it's all the decisions you make along the way, the mistakes, struggles, and surprises! These pathways you create - this is learning.

Was brought a rather unresponsive pipistrelle bat that found its way into the building y'day. After 1/2 a day of drinking water and getting the taste of civilisation (mealworms) - the tiny chap happily took off in the evening all by himself. An amazing break from all this screen-staring.

Knowing even a little bit of how DAGs work, and tiny pieces of causal inference can mean...you suddenly realise some (new and old) 'big' papers in your field arent really showing what they claim..even if there is a 'positive' signal...sigh...

The SonoRo robot platform in action at #ANTS2026. Individual robots find/repel each other and show flocking using only their acoustic beacons. This is much like many animal/insect groups. Here we show even simple rules and coarse sensory capabilities give rise to collective behaviour. 1/N

Def worth reading, while replacing examples w ones from your own field....."once you do control, you may end up with the conclusion that you can’t conclude anything. To be entirely clear, that would be the correct conclusion. It’s just not a fun one."

Writing a grant and putting DAGs out there for the first time in the analysis section. Anyone here ever tried this out? Wondering if it's too much - or also a bit concerned that it may backfire if reviewers think this is 'obvious' and not worthy of separate figure(s) for each analysis question😅.

This is scarily true - professional + collegial attention- & esp. true for scientific software. I'm imagining a niche field - where there are anyway only 1-2 OSS package/s out there. Even lesser incentives to develop, test, document, if it'll all be spat out as code snippets 1/2
