Big cities must do better to fix the housing crisis. We have a severe shortage of homes, yet cities like Vancouver continue to block apartments across most residential areas, driving up the cost of market and non-market homes alike. New from me in the Vancouver Sun vancouversun.com/opinion/op-e...

Opinion: B.C.’s big cities must do better to fix the housing crisis
Cities too often use their powers to restrict housing or make it too expensive to build while forcing new housing onto noisy main roads

Some of my best friends are poets, escaping reverberations of sameness with nothing but the essentials of functional adverbs and decorative nouns. Watch them closely. Unlock the car doors and let them take your passenger seat when you see them fleeing on foot.

When I use my most caring and thoughtful words, I could measure them in iambic pentameter, spoon them out in stanzas of concern. Care, though, sometimes has urgency. Staccato, loud, frantic and harsh exclamations that echo in ears demanding action or immediate response.

I light the candles at my table, where blessings abound because we have warmth & water, salt & sweetness, fat & bread, meat & wine. I light candles not to chase away darkness, but to show its limits. We can't pray away heartbreak, disappointment or grief, but are blessed by memory, love & humour.

Bills C-2 and C-5 violate human rights, Indigenous rights, and the environment. Rescinding the digital services tax was bad for our economy. Removing counter-tariffs weakened our position. Investing heavily in the military takes money from social programs.

🧵 I was really more hopeful when Carney was elected. I thought, since he promised to fight for Canada and had a good track record on the climate crisis, and promised not to cut social programs, we might be OK. I voted NDP, but I had some hope. I no longer have hope for this government.

Maybe it's not the rare nanobytes of sentiment left playing across the surface of your heart like the ghosts in Pacman that are the problem. Maybe the opposite would have been the better response. Maybe wearing that heart on your sleeve, letting it grow into the whole blouse would have been better.
