Cataloging and digital collections bluesky: Anyone migrated special collections into Bibframe yet? I'm interested in looking at the underlying LOD.

My 2025 presentation on virginity in Nonnos’ Dionysiaca has received the @womensclasscaucus.bsky.social award for Outstanding Pre-PhD Paper Presentation. Give the WCC a follow and check out the other awardees - they’re doing incredible work!

Now that I’ve relocated, I’m excited to share that I’ll be based at the Smithsonian Institution for the next year as a research fellow in the Office of Digital and Innovation where I’ll be working to expand collections access as part of the Revolution Crossroads team.

Uninterested in leading a pile-on but no, AI does not “have access” to everything ever published. Not archival material, obviously, but not secondary material either. Nor across times nor languages. AI is not human knowledge personified. It’s exactly not that, in fact. It’s not even a search engine.

I’ve been in the same place for a while (and I’m still there!). Even when I’m feeling like a total failure for not being as productive as I think I should be, I try to acknowledge that every small bit does actually move me closer to the finish line. And you’re not alone. It’s a sucky place to be in.

Another late-breaking postdoc in Humanities Leadership at Yale's Whitney Humanities Center. The person in charge has said they will begin reviewing applications June 13 (which means the deadlines on this posting are to be ignored)

What’s your best tip for overcoming writer’s block, or, as I prefer it, writer’s inertia? (The end is in sight, but I keep getting distracted!)

We have a Teaching Fellow in Classical Language and Literature (Latin) job that is now open; fixed term from Sept 26 to June 28. Deadline is tight (24th April). The post covers a colleague's career break. There's some team teaching with me; happy to answer any questions folks might have.

I’m looking to build out my methodological reading list. Who are some of the “can’t miss” thinkers, and what are some of the most reliable primers you would recommend for reading up on feminist and / or postcolonial theory? (Or related approaches!)

I would say that his work played a big part in opening up the ways that we look at Dionysos and think about the intersections of myth and cult. Definitely worth a read!

Albert Henrichs is important for challenging the myth-ritualist readings that really exaggerated the “dark allure” of Dionysos and (re)focusing attention on historical Maenad practices. Not sure what you can get without institutional access, but he has a number of useful articles!

What is your best advice for structuring and writing conclusions of dissertations or books? (It’s my least favorite part of writing articles and papers, so this stage of the “big project” feels very daunting).

Some of the SCS panels are associated with the wrong groups and most of the sessions (from the program view) don’t appear to list the actual presentations! I’ll probably be looking at the digital program on the SCS website for most of the meeting this year…

Years ago, I was told that Ancient Greeks did not sacrifice fish, with the exception of tuna. I think the assumption was that the Greeks sacrificed any red meat, and tuna is a particularly red or bloody fish. Is this true? Can anyone working on sacrifice chime in? #ClassicsBluesky #AncientBluesky

No one says to legit business owners, "hey I see there's an underground market selling toxic knock-offs of your product: how will you incorporate the toxic product AND protect your customers against its harms?" But apparently it's fine to make this suggestion to educators with respect to AI.

And wouldn't it be nice if spell-check would stop flagging bits and pieces of proper nouns that we all use consistently? It's clearly not comfortable with some out-of-context Welsh.

BREAKING: The Supreme Court allows the Trump administration to move forward with the abolition of the Department of Education. It gives no explanation for its order. All three liberals dissent. www.documentcloud.org/documents/25... From Sotomayor's dissent:
Lifting the District Court’s injunction will unleash
untold harm, delaying or denying educational opportunities
and leaving students to suffer from discrimination, sexual
assault, and other civil rights violations without the federal
resources Congress intended. The majority apparently
deems it more important to free the Government from paying employees it had no right to fire than to avert these very
real harms while the litigation continues. Equity does not
support such an inequitable result.
* * *
The President must take care that the laws are faithfully
executed, not set out to dismantle them. That basic rule
undergirds our Constitution’s separation of powers. Yet today, the majority rewards clear defiance of that core principle with emergency relief. Because I cannot condone such
abuse of our equitable authority, I respectfully dissent.

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE. This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined. It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.

Looking forward to dipping my toes into some Late Antique / Early Christian material at #CAAS2025 this fall. I’ll be giving a paper on Aura as a model of “bad” virginity in Nonnos’ Dionysiaca. Really grateful to have these smaller conferences for trying out ideas. (Now to finish the dissertation…)
