Historically, more productivity led to higher standards of living, and that's important! But today, I am concerned that marginal increases to productivity may actually take away from the things that make life joyful, connected, and gratifying. We need better measures of innovation that reflect this.

This is part of what I'm trying to articulate with the (admittedly kinda cheeky) notion of the #FunEconomy. There are things that we should not automate BECAUSE they are enjoyable. We should be focusing on making labor more rewarding and pleasant, and we should let the things that already are alone!
Two paths meme where one side labeled “full automation” leads to a dark castle titled “permanent underclass” and a mirage titled “luxury communism” and the path leading to the sunny bright castle says “fun economy”

If you do that you're forced to understand what the agents have changed (and make sure the changes are actually comprehensible) before each manual implementation step in a way that 99.99% of us just can't do through code reviews alone. It slows things down a *bit* but the tradeoff is so worth it

another hot take I haven't bothered fully baking: if you're just sending agents off to do all the coding in a large codebase you're severely undermining its long term. If you hold out a few pieces of the implementation process to do by hand for any given feature, the output is way better

Historic warmth is currently impacting our global oceans. September shattered the previous peak for the warmest average global sea surface temperature on record for the month. And this excessive heat is found across nearly all regions. Data from NOAA ERSSTv6. I finally adjusted the y-axis here. 🌊
Green line graph time series of average sea surface temperature anomalies for each September from 1900 through 2026. There is large interannual variability, but an overall long-term increasing trend. Anomalies are computed relative to a 1981-2010 baseline.

A hulking figure wearing a white shirt and dark tie stands in a dismal, dimly lit space, gesturing to a glowing white screen on which are displayed various dull-colored charts and indecipherable text. The figure has a black hole for a head. The painting is signed "Chris Silverman".

Hosting parties is easy: Text your friends that you are having a party. Go to trader Joe’s and buy all the silly snacks that look good. Get some drinks. Put the food and drink out. Play some music. Introduce strangers to each other. When you want people to leave, start cleaning up. Done!

I actually think this is a trap. I think our emphasis should be on making work (including the kind of work they do in Star Trek) as rewarding and fun as possible and let automation of labor be a side effect of that, rather than a goal, which disempowers people

The Los Angeles Police Department's officer union said Tuesday it will oppose Measure FD, the half-cent sales tax measure on the Nov. 3 ballot pushed by the city firefighters' union - setting up a bitter and expensive clash between two of the city's most powerful unions.
The Police Protective League said it plans to spend several million dollars on broadcast and digital advertising as well as mailers to oppose Measure FD, which if approved by voters would direct hundreds of millions of dollars annually to the Fire Department to build new stations, hire firefighters and upgrade

one sort of funny thing about the civmil literature I've read is that that for every Gen. Killmurder lusting for war against civilian restraint there's like five example of military leadership being basically lazy bureaucrats who don't want to do various things because, y'know, effort

Love so many things that are happening in Illinois, but this is not one to be proud of. Biofuels are a net negative to the climate and a worse use of land than solar and other energy generation.

How anesthesia works isn't well understood. "Inhaled anesthetics...they now argue, work by inhibiting the mitochondria, inducing a kind of temporary brownout in the brain. The bubbles used to transport brain chemicals become frozen in place...They restart as soon as anesthesia is discontinued."
But Morgan and Sedensky kept working out the details of their theory. Inhaled anesthetics such as sevoflurane, they now argue, work by inhibiting the mitochondria, inducing a kind of temporary brownout in the brain. The bubbles used to transport brain chemicals become frozen in place, like cars that have run out of gas. They restart as soon as anesthesia is discontinued. But in some hypersensitive patients, the mitochondria could become so impaired that their brain cells die. Morgan had found some of these hypersensitive patients before, but he believes Uli’s mutation could help pinpoint more precisely how anesthesia works on mitochondria. This past summer, cells with the mutation—derived from Yaremy’s blood sample—arrived in the couple’s lab in Seattle.

Yeah, I think that a lot of people think overwork comes from above, when it really comes from within. It’s hard to have discipline about it, but I think there are some age-old wisdoms that can help like observing a form of Shabbat. I have a friend who has a screen-free day each week, and that’s big.

I keep reading about Greenham Common, including yesterday in Naomi Klein and Astra Taylors' book End Times Fascism we're in such a different context now, but I remember how that non-violent protest persisted for nineteen years (I'm scared of globally dominant state militaries and terrorism, fyi)
The United States rushed over the weekend to withdraw all 12 B-1 Air Force bombers from an air base in southern England after commanders received new threats about an Iran-backed plot against the installation, two U.S. officials said on Sunday.

The withdrawal was highly unusual: Such moves are rarely made so quickly from an allied air base in a peacetime country thousands of miles from a combat zone.

The need to move the bombers out of the base, R.A.F. Fairford, was deemed so urgent that some of the planes and their flight crews left while aerial refueling aircraft were still being scrambled to support their flights to the United States. At least three of the planes had landed at their home base in South Dakota by Sunday, the officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss operational matters.
