Come on down to the Council House for International Day of Birmingham, see the Re-Union Jack ♥️ #OneBrum Goldship have repurposed dozens of dirty & torn polyester flags removed from Birmingham's lamp posts to create a huge Union Jack, adorned with the names of people who have called Birmingham home
Photo of artwork description
GOLDSHIP Re-Union Jack 2026

Repurposed polyester flags/Mixed media.

Re-Union Jack is an ongoing community art project conceived by GoldShip, the creative duo of textile sculptor Clare Elisabeth and event producer Sam Shipman.

Repurposing dozens of dirty and torn polyester flags removed from Birmingham's lamp posts, Clare and Sam, alongside countless contributors from the wider community, pieced them together to create a huge Union Jack.

The flag was then transformed over several months by countless more contributors into a visual celebration of the people and stories that have helped shape the West Midlands. Across its surface are the names of influential Midlanders, spanning from the Anglo-Saxon Beorma, after whom Birmingham takes its name, through to the present day. Each has a connection to migration, immigration or the positive influence of people who have made the West Midlands their home.

Together, these names reflect the region's extraordinary history as a vibrant melting pot of cultures, ideas, talent and communities - and the positive contribution that migration has made to its identity.

The flag has since been signed in black by many of the people whose names feature upon it as a collective endorsement of its message of unity, inclusion and community.Photo of huge Union (Jack) Flag on lighting truss in the hall of the Council House.
It's glorious and bears many names upon it of the people of Birmingham

@clondoner92.bsky.social Red is the current £2 bus cap area in Scotland, green is the Strathclyde (SPT) area supposedly getting the cap on Monday and purple is the Lothian area with its own flat fares, zones and capping. Everywhere else which is not that much is waiting for the policy.

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

Seems especially true with invisible disabilities. I used to be really good at masking my autism and was described as ‘higher functioning’ when I was diagnosed as a child. Now I have less tolerance of sensory issues(since Covid) & even family take issue. But I always struggled, I just hid it before!

Throwing pedestrians and cyclists literally under the bus is 1960s transport policy, and is bad for health, the economy, and congestion. Do they say where all the additional cars will go at each end of the journey? Which other roads they will congest?
A quote “Building more roads to prevent congestion is like a fat man loosening his belt to prevent obesity” by Lewis Mumford 1955.
Mumford's quote is often used to illustrate how increasing the capacity of existing roads and parking spaces does not solve the underlying causes of traffic congestion and has the opposite effect due to induced demand.
