Not to take away from celebrating Carson, but she's a "former professor" here in large part because the university shut down her department and cancelled its classes. What pride does the institution claim now—years later—when austerity is forcing other scholars out? What does that 'pride' do?

To be clear, this is not voluntary departure granted by an immigration judge— which itself can be coerced. They didn’t even get a hearing with a judge: just a form from ICE “I-210 Voluntary departure and verification of departure”

The “voluntary departure” orders are an absolute scandal. You detain someone illegally. Conditions are terrible. So then DHS deprives them of a hearing with an immigration judge or even a credible fear screening (after expedited removal order) by having them sign all their rights away to DHS

And, there’s this whole other component of the problem: there is literally NO reception infrastructure here in Cap Haitien. Unless there are relatives to pick people up. Just taken from airport, to police station, and dropped on the street. In their ICE sweatpants and no shoe laces.

Many stories of illegal detention (while still in active TPS status) and just brutal treatment in detention. People so brutalized that they ask to be deported— one man asked every week — but remained detained for 6 additional weeks! He could have been put on several previously deportation flights!

oh my God. this is all so fucking dystopian. this bit in particular really got me:
screencap from the article I'm quote-posting:

In August, Michael Reynolds, executive publisher at Europa Editions, an independent press in New York best known for publishing Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan Quartet of novels, told a room full of booksellers at the New Voices New Rooms conference in Baltimore he was excited about the possibilities for AI in translation and “seemed baffled by critiques of it,” according to attendees. Europa Editions is already controversial among literary circles for leaving the names of its human (for now) translators off the covers of its books.

All Protocol Observed Welcome to Issue 255 of The Continent The warning signs in Tigray have been building for months. The Continent reconstructs how peace failed. bit.ly/255_TC
The cover of Issue 255 of The Continent shows a tall, cracked stone monument rising from a pile of rubble in the middle of a city. The words “Peace for Ethiopia” run vertically down its front in large blue letters. A white dove perches on top, beside a pair of scales, symbols of peace and justice. The monument is broken and weathered, with cracks running through the stone. Behind it, pale blue buildings sit beneath a soft, hazy sky, glowing yellow around the horizon. The scene feels quiet but uneasy, as if the promise of peace is still standing, just barely, amid the wreckage. It is illustrated by Wynona Mutisi
