Found an old homework page: transliterating the colophon of the 1721 print of the Golden Beam Sutra (Mongolian Altan gerel) in Classical Mongolian script. The margins show the real puzzle: a/e, o/u, t/d, k/g share letter shapes, so vowel harmony and context decide. Good old times. 🧐 #Suvarṇaprabhāsa
Photocopied book page, numbered 272, showing a woodblock-printed passage in Classical Mongolian script, printed sideways so the vertical columns run horizontally across the page. Thick black borders frame seven columns of bold calligraphic text. Handwritten pencil notes surround nearly every word, giving possible sound values for ambiguous letters, such as a/e, o/u, ö/ü, t/d, k/g and y/j, with some guesses crossed out and a few circled question marks. The printed caption reads: "From the colophon of the 1721 print of the Golden Beam Sutra."

If you expect the unexpected, would the unexpected still remain unexpected, given the unexpected is now expected?

Shown a spiky shape and a blobby one, then asked which is "kiki" and which is "bouba," people worldwide overwhelmingly give the same answer: spiky is kiki. Sound and shape are linked in the brain in ways nobody fully explains. Saussure's arbitrary sign has a little asterisk. #lingsky

Correction: that should be [ɾ̝̊] with the raising diacritic, which marks frication. The lowering diacritic I used would imply the opposite. Linguists, you're welcome to point and laugh. 😁

Söyleşinin asıl tezi dil planlamasının sosyodilbilimsel gerçeği: doğru terimi bulmak yetmez; dernekle, dergiyle kurumsallaştırmak ve on yıllarca yinelemek gerekir. "Bilgisayar" ancak kişisel bilgisayarlar yaygınlaşınca halka mal oldu. #lingsky #dilbilim 🧵 5/5

“In corpus linguistics, a hapax legomenon (/ˈhæpəks lɪˈɡɒmɪnɒn/) is a word or an expression that occurs only once within a context: either in the written record of an entire language, in the works of an author, or in a single text.” Today’s harvest.

More on Turkish /r/: It is a plain alveolar tap [ɾ] intervocalically, but word finally (and before a voiceless consonant) it devoices and gains audible frication: transcribed [ɾ̞̊] (a voiceless tapped fricative). This can be "mistaken for [ʃ] or [ʂ] by non-Turkish speakers. #TurkishSLA

Turkish for English speakers, built on a morphophonological engine that generates every exercise from the grammar instead of a fixed bank. Vowel harmony comes first, since nothing else in Turkish works without it, sequenced by research on SLA and paced by per-rule mastery tracking. ayter.com/langram

A pangram is a sentence that uses every letter of the alphabet of the language in formation. In English, it’s “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” Turkish: “Pijamalı hasta yağız şoföre çabucak güvendi.” And Swedish: “Flygande bäckasiner söka hwila på mjuka tuvor.”

Semaphore now recognizes ASL digits 0–9 alongside the A–Z manual alphabet — 39 static signs in total, at 99% test accuracy. The recognizer's label space is now open-ended, so new static signs can be added by training, with no code changes. ayter.com/semaphore

Waluigi is the true nowhere man, without the other characters he reflects, inverts and parodies he has no reason to exist. Waluigi’s identity only comes from what and who he isn’t – without a wider frame of reference he is nothing.

The same thing but slightly less. You invert Mario to create Wario – Mario turned septic and libertarian – then you reflect the inversion in the reflection: you create a being who can only exist in reference to others.

"Waluigi is the ultimate example of the individual shaped by the signifier. Waluigi is a man seen only in mirror images; lost in a hall of mirrors he is a reflection of a reflection of a reflection. You start with Mario – the wholesome all Italian plumbing superman, you reflect him to create Luigi.🧵

A Gagauz folk song: Oğlan oğlan kalk gidelim. Granitza'nın boyunda koyun güdelim. Ne güzel oğlan, yalabık çoban. Oğlanın evi sarı samandan. Ona yaklaşamıcam tozdan dumandan. Ne güzel oğlan, yalabık çoban. Oğlan oğlan, boynuma dolan. Şu elinlen saçından bana yap yorgan. Ne güzel oğlan, yalabık çoban.

In Taiwanese, @ is "little mouse" (小老鼠 (xiǎo lǎoshǔ). It's "dog" (собака/sobaka) in Russian, "strudel" (שְׁטְרוּדֶל/shtrúdel) in Hebrew, "monkey's tail" (apestaart) in Dutch, "duckling" (παπάκι/papaki) in Greek, and "snail" escargot in French. The @ sign is a mirror of history going back 1000's of years.

“kaçıncı” is a turkish word that doesn’t correlate to a word in english. i propose a new word “whichnth” (pronounced which-unth) for it. so instead of saying “how many times has this happened abi ya!” you say “whichnth is this abi ya!”. (“abi ya” is just an exclamation for frustration)
