You’ve seen how the system reacts when it perceives a terrible threat like Greenies throwing paint, or grannies protesting genocide. You know what that looks like. It looks nothing like this.

Jonathan Powell advised Ed Miliband not to ban imports from settlements before Israeli elections - Tim Shipman spectator.com/ article/reve...
The British ambassador in Tel Aviv, Simon Walters, who was of the same opinion, delivered a 'very explicit warning not to move so quickly. As a former director of national security for the Middle East in the Foreign Office, he had a deep understanding of the security implications. More remarkably, Jonathan Powell, the National Security Adviser, was of the same view. He was the most important figure in government on foreign policy during Keir Starmer's premiership, but now seems to have been ignored on the first major issue of Burnham's tenure.
What Powell and Walters sensed was that Benjamin Netanyahu, the combative Israeli Prime Minister, was in trouble in the polls and likely to lose his majority, and that any intervention before polling day would be weaponised by the Israeli right to drum up support for the government.
This has been confirmed by three different sources. 'Ed wants to get rid of Netanyahu and the Smotrich/Ben-Gvir lot [Netanyahu's far-right coalition partners], a senior security source says. 'He was explicitly told that would be less likely if he did this?

The Hamas leadership seem to have calculated that giving Israel the excuse they wanted to launch The Day of Reckoning by sparking the genocide themselves would shock the world’s conscience. Unfortunately, the US government is racist as fuck, and it turns out they’re fine with genocide.

What’s happened here is: somewhere in London, a PR company has a whiteboard with “UK Defence Security Campaign” written above a calendar that has “Tony Blair Times column” in a date in the second week and - under the heading “list of crank wankers we can put on TV/Radio” - are the words “Alan West”.

I'd also like to know what is the magical property of 3.5% of GDP being spent on defence that is a guaranteed Putin repellent, as opposed to the 2.7% we currently spend which is apparently catnip to the Russians as a sign that we're begging to be invaded.

Is it not worrying, if “hybrid warfare against Britain by hostile foreign powers, intended to cause violent unrest and societal meltdown”; “a shocking scoop by your super soaraway Sun” and an editorial in the Times of London are essentially indistinguishable, apparently with the same aims

And here’s a fun one to think about: how exactly do we think a minor figure in the Labour Party - who just happened to be a close friend of Peter Mandelson - managed to drum up most of a million quid from rich wingnuts, then get a series of front-page scandals in newspapers? Was he just talented.

Yeah, but the position of almost everyone in politics and media is that it was just fine for them all to at very least play along with Mandelson’s ludicrous secret wrecking campaign and forcing his friends back into high office via lying and bullshit, but this is unacceptable.

Starmer's position is that Olly Robbins behaved appallingly for not blocking his decision to appoint Mandelson US amb after it had been announced, blessed by the King and agreed by the US in time for the inauguration-as requested by No 10—because of security risks the Foreign Office deemed manageable.

If you want to get an idea of how much peril Keir Starmer is in this weekend, his allies are once again issuing stark warnings to his rivals about the risk of changing leaders at a time of economic and geopolitical instability
Liz Kendall tells @TrevorPTweets:
'Keir Starmer is my favourite to be the prime minister to take us into the next election
'Let me tell you right now that with the cost of living crisis people are facing and with the world so uncertain - that's deeply frightening to people - any politician that focuses more on their future and their job, not only people's futures and their jobs, will lose the public support'

The explanation for this is entirely within the British ruling elite too: in 2003, Tony felt quite confident basically telling a zillion protestors to fuck off. The more criminal and genocidal the wars have got, the louder the shrieks and denunciations get, the more the authoritarianism intensifies.
