When I first went on the job market, I got offers from the best places & chose Stanford. The joy of that moment was tempered by the vitriol of those convinced I was unworthy of such opportunities. I learned long ago I’ll never convince them I am worthy. What great freedom came from that awareness.

Learning was always about balancing the stress of productive struggle with the temptation to just glance at the answer key and the temptation got ratcheted up intensely. Unsurprisingly, this creates challenges for a lot of people!

I’m sure many people are working on this but what are the epistemic implications of these services for our study of online communities? Garbage in garbage out is not a new concept but how do we avoid throwing the baby out with the bathwater here?

I love this framing. We need more epistemic humility in general, but especially where we rely upon proxies for hard-to-measure constructs. It’s nuanced but also it’s not!

1/ New @Nature! We study how powerful institutions shape the information environment for LLMs. Commercial LLM training is opaque, so we trace a path from state-coordinated media -> training data -> model responses.
