I'd learned about this years ago and just reacquainted myself with the story. Today in The Patriarchy Fucking Sucks: 2026 is the year of the fire horse, an element+zodiac combo that comes once every 60 years. Girls born in this year are stigmatized as willful+bad luck and LOOK at the stigma in Japan

Under the Chinese zodiac, 2026 will be the year of “Hinoe-uma” (Fire Horse), which, according to a scientifically baseless superstition, is bad news for newborn females.

Hinoe-uma years come around every 60 years based on the combinations of the 12 animal signs and 10 heavenly stems.

The low birthrate in the previous Hinoe-uma year, 1966, showed that the discriminatory superstition has persisted over centuries.

According to “A scientific study of the Hinoe-uma superstition,” a publication based on a 1935 lecture by scholar Hansei Kobayashi, women born in Fire Horse years are “strong-willed, surpassing men, devour seven husbands, bring ruin to their families, and cannot peacefully fulfill their duties as women.”

Other unscientific and misogynistic beliefs about Hinoe-uma women included having “a strong libido, like a vigorous horse.”

It is believed that these ideas culminated into the notion that women born in a Hinoe-uma year have fiery tempers and shorten their husbands’ lives.

The origin of the superstition dates back to the Edo Period (1603-1867), with a description appearing in a 1662 poetry collection.

Later, the superstition was featured in “senryu” poems and “joruri” puppet theater, spreading the belief among the common people.

Despite criticism that the Hinoe-uma superstition was “baseless and irrational,” it remained deeply rooted.

The superstition’s impact was most evident during the Hinoe-uma year of the Showa Period (1926-1989).

In 1966, the number of births in Japan was about 1.36 million, a decrease of 460,000, or more than 25 percent, from the previous year’s 1.82 million.

In 1967, the number recovered to about 1.93 million.

Japanese birth and death rates since 1950. There is a noticeable dip of 5-6 per thousand in birth, from what you would expect of around 19 births per thousand in 1966. It's thought that the drop was due to being the year of the fire horse.

Another not daily #Hongjoong because I have so much to procrastinate on, of course I’m drawing the captain. There’s stuff to fix but I need to put in some work.. probably

Procreate screencap with photo reference of Hongjoong flirtily winking with his finger up to his teeth, from a photocard, with drawing next to it.

Not at all daily #Hongjoong from last night. I often like these simpler, slightly cartoony sketches better. If I put in the hours to do the full color and shading, it winds up more frustrating for me because it’s never as accurate/photorealistic as I’d like.

Procreate screencap of sepia toned Hongjoong concept poster as photo reference and drawing next to it in similar monochrome palette. He’s visible from just above the shoulders up, in a mandarin type of collar, looking at the camera from over his shoulder, chin up in the air.

I thought I’d shared this one already but I can’t find it. Anyway, I tinkered with it again and I think it’s an improvement? I seem to keep picking challenging #Hongjoong references.

Procreate screencap of Hongjoong photo reference from a fansign event, smiling with a warm :3 face, and a painterly take next to it. He has brown hair covering his forehead, small hoop earrings in both ears, and a white shirt against a grey background.

I started this ages ago and really really hated it. The angle is REALLY hard and it was driving me crazy. I took it out tonight again and still feel like it’s not great but it feels closer to #Hongjoong and I’m cringing less looking at it. It’s off from the reference but in a somewhat.. okay way.

Procreate screencap with photo reference of a smiling Hongjoong and digital painting next to it. He’s mid-dance move, hair floating a bit and showing his undercut. His chin is up but he’s making eye contact with the camera, big toothy grin as expected from him.

it’s come to my attention that my tumblr post has been crossposted to bluesky, so I’m posting it on my account here #AntiAI #GenAI

recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

I guess while I’m issuing corrections, I should amend that there is some choreo at the very end of the medley and Yunho in fact has a bomb dance spotlight with hand moves. Vaguely voguing? Not quite waacking, but some flavor of that kind of street dance. It looks very satisfying.

I answered somebody in the Ateez comm on tumblr and counted how many words other commenters gave -- all Guerilla and one Halazia recs, five words *max*. My answer.....sigh. My life's purpose is truly to look for reasons to infodump, isn't it.

posted in Ateez 3h ago:
Fellow atiny, I am kind of sort of still a babytiny and I need help

So I have a friend who I think would like Ateez and I’m trying to get her to listen to some of the songs, and we made a deal that I get to play her one of their songs and if she likes it then she has to listen to more of the songs. I just need help picking which song to have her listen to. If it helps, she’s a fan of metal and rock music and I’m pretty sure she likes the band Gorillaz

avawtsn:
Guerilla is made for the rock/metal fans for sure. The MV is great, but if you want to extra lean into the rock aspect, I recommend showing her a performance of Flag ver. which is a proper rock mix; you can preview the studio recording to hear how it's different from the regular Guerilla recording, but it really should be experienced as a live concert experience, because starting in early 2024, they started doing Flag ver. almost exclusively with a live band, which is a really special experience imo. And also very special about Towards the Light: Will to Power tour in 2024 is that Hongjoong opened each with a guitar solo(!) because he's the fucking COOLEST. (My bias, I had to.) And since their second weekend at Coachella in April 2024, Hongjoong's done the legit metal *scream* for "so long" in his opening lines to boot. I don't know if linking the URL will work, but if you look up this youtube video from "ateezpunch" it's titled " ATEEZ - Guerrilla (Flag Ver.) | TOWARDS THE LIGHT: WILL TO POWER FINALE IN SEOUL 4K" -- live performances of Guerilla also include a gnarly yell by Yunho saying "MAKE SOME NOISE" and the best fanchant in kpop "BREAK THE WALLLLL" that can be *famously* heard outside of stadiums. Guerilla's great, highly recommend. And if you're more MV folks, it's still great. I think Bouncy is also a possibility, Halazia which has already been brought up, and hmm, I might pick Wonderland too, and/or Crazy Form. And the Outlaw showcase as a wildcard because it's a B side haha and the whole album is a banger. And last thought, if you can cheat showing "one of their songs" by picking a medley, they have lots of awards show performances to choose from. Like the most recent one was from NYE and you can find it on youtube from Lemon Drop + ARRIBA + DJANGO from MBCkpop, or Blind + In Your Fantasy from KBS Kpop. These both have Latin flavored B sides, not rock-oriented, but a great showcase of how fun they are live. My ults.
