My son informed me that a giant bucket as tall as outer space is going to rain water down on us and wash away all the trees, buildings, and bugs. So I guess he's discovered the flood myths.

Thinking today about how much Add It Up by Violent Femmes was a proto-incel anthem. It's apparent in the lyrics, of course. But I never really thought about how much the song occupies that space between "sad guy" anthems about heartbreak and loneliness and the violence we're experiencing today.

Excerpt of “Whole”:

“When Brad was eight or nine, he and some older kids tossed a washing machine into the hole. It banged on the cliff face, then faded away.”

Watching the old Inspector Gadget cartoon with our kid and was struck by this sad idea that so much of the TV shows from our childhoods were engineered to keep us company while our parents fought in the background.

Variations on Clarke’s third law, “"any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic"
“The third law has inspired many snowclones and other variations:
Any sufficiently advanced extraterrestrial intelligence is indistinguishable from God.[8][9] (Shermer's last law)
Any sufficiently advanced act of benevolence is indistinguishable from malevolence[10] (referring to artificial intelligence)
Any sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice[8] (Grey's law)
Any sufficiently advanced garbage is indistinguishable from magic.[11] (Sterling's corollary to Clarke's law) This idea also underlies the setting of the novel Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, in which human stalkers try to navigate the location of an alien "visitation", trying to make sense of technically advanced items discarded by the aliens.
Any sufficiently advanced garbage is indistinguishable from a rigged demo.[12]
Any sufficiently familiar technology is indistinguishable from nature.[13]”

I've been having an interesting time lately completing edits and final drafts on stories I wrote and forgot about for years; in some cases, close to eight(!) It's tremendously therapeutic, and probably the closest I've come to feeling like I was reading someone else's writing.

Written text: I was at a summer camp for kids and they woke up the kids in the middle of the night to take them to the forest and tell spooky stories, where one of the counselors was hiding and scared them all to run back.
I wanted to go but fell back asleep instead of getting up out of bed. When the kids all got back screaming and running a few of them told me what happened, but they all had wildly different stories of what happened. It was a ghost, an animal, a woman, a demon, a horse..
I learned that even if someone witnessed something firsthand, their brain will make stuff up to fill in the blanks without them even realizing they are "lying"
