I dunno how on earth Momo became ruined by vinegar this badly but rip. (Unless, I bought it in this condition? That seems unlikely...) Anyway, I moved it somewhere else.

Anyway, don't expect the blog's extremely erratic and limited output to change. (Yes, the Ace cel isn't from the movie) For those who read the interview, I hope it brightened your day in these trying times. For the many who didn't click through yet, don't miss out!

I do understand wanting to just get the main gist of things without going through the whole ordeal of learning JP. For someone who communicates like Dezaki though, I would advise extra scrutiny on the output, if you're going to lean on it at all.

Part of me feels like I'm just putting myself through a lot of unnecessary pain when people were mostly previously content to run things through DeepL etc. and now through some LLM.

Austin @austin.karageko.com · 11/09/2026
Others were already using AI/ML translation tooling with various levels of being open about its involvement back when I was more active with the blog, and as everyone knows it's only more rampant than ever.

Austin @austin.karageko.com · 11/09/2026
I've also personally always had conflicted feelings about the content I put out on the blog -- it was originally just meant to be a personal space for me, which is ironic considering it mostly became unofficial translations I started putting there on a whim.

Austin @austin.karageko.com · 11/09/2026
But that's not why I translated the Ace interview. I'm compelled to mention that my naive hope for all these years has been for these translations to inspire others to dig deeper into JP resources on Dezaki and maybe pick up the torch, because man do I dislike doing translations.

The 9th anniversary of the blog (Aug 23) passed by without much fanfare. I waited until after I released the interview to mention it because it's kind of a coming full circle moment: the first post was a (mostly pointless) article on how I came across the Aim for the Ace movie.

Copying my comments from the other platform: Considering no one mentioned anything in JP/EN about the movie on [other platform] in the 24 hours prior to publishing the article, I was prepared for no one to care after I hit the button. Maybe agonizing over minutiae for weeks was worth something.

Marine Express (1979) It's a minor thing, but I got a kick out of these initial horizontal credits alternating between descent and ascent.🙂 The end credits also scroll vertically in the opposite direction.😃

Anyway, as it turns out, the sole "postcard memory" I own is from Black Jack.
030
Austin @austin.karageko.com · 07/09/2026
My face when even the commentary subtitles don't use the term "postcard memories". (They would be right not to, since Dezaki doesn't refer to a postcard in his description) FWIW none of the Black Jack commentary tracks conducted on the JP side (Ep 1, 6, and Movie) touch upon the subject either.

Austin @austin.karageko.com · 07/09/2026
I did look through the episode 10 commentary and nothing to do with harmony / postcard memories is discussed.

Today is a 1965 day. Gulliver no Uchuu Ryokou (Gulliver's Travels Beyond the Moon) There's a lot of neat things design-wise, but the movie as a whole kinda fell flat for me. Maybe another case of too much musical. Going to take a break from early Toei Dōga feature films for a bit.

I was also surprised by the first post-opening shot in all of its background animation glory. And I sure didn't expect the roller coaster near the end, haha. No complaints, I had a good time.

Today is a 1963 day. Wan Wan Chuushingura (Doggie March) This is good. I'm not one for the animal antics normally, but despite being all about the animals, I thought it was great. The camerawork and directing is a lot better than previous entries.

I also quite like the styling of the "The End" (終) kanji character here.

Today is a 1962 day. Arabian Nights: Sindbad no Bouken (Sinbad's Adventures) Compared to the previous film, I actually thought it was good overall. Maybe because the presence of the animals feels just ever so slightly lessened? Haha No, I think some of the camera positioning is better too.

Regardless, as usual, the waves of the sea were satisfying to see in motion. Like Shounen Sarutobi Sasuke, the part I found the most simple enjoyment in was the monster fight in the latter half.

Today is a 1961 day. Anju to Zushiou Maru (The Littlest Warrior) Thought about it for a while, but I think think one of the reasons the early Toei Doga films are kinda boring to me is the camerawork & perspective. There were one or two shots slightly more interesting in this regard though.

Today is a 1959 day. Shounen Sarutobi Sasuke (Magic Boy) Well, I guess I enjoyed it more than Hakujaden (Panda and the Magic Serpent)... I like the 3D-ish look of the credits. I don't have any desire to ever rewatch this besides maybe the climax at the end, which has some nice effects animation.

Of course, when it comes to digital animation, it's referring to an attempt to recreate the aesthetic, or something inspired by it, as opposed to the original analog process.

Austin @austin.karageko.com · 02/09/2026
"postcard memories" is the term predominantly used in English. The rare time I see someone use "harmony" instead, it's usually by someone who can understand some Japanese. It's understandable. Besides maybe wherever the former term originated from, all material in Japanese uses the term "harmony".
120
Austin @austin.karageko.com · 01/09/2026
To create the "harmony" shot, only the line art is traced onto the cel, and the actual character colors are painted directly onto the background. This is the "harmonization" between the two layers. (3/3)
0236
Austin @austin.karageko.com · 01/09/2026
As a reminder, the usual process in analog animation is that the line art for a character is traced onto a cel and painted, and then stacked atop a background and filmed. (2/3)
