The CHNV program provided a vital refuge, and the people who came filled vacant jobs. But now, Trump is targeting these immigrants and Biden has declined to renew the program.

A report from World Relief on who is really in danger of deportation. worldrelief.org/pr-new-repor...
The report finds that, as of the end of 2024, more than 10 million Christians are vulnerable to deportation, accounting for roughly 80 percent of all of those at risk of deportation. Another 7 million U.S. citizen Christians live in the same households as those at risk of deportation. Overall, one out of every 12 Christians in the U.S. — including one out of 18 evangelical Christians and nearly one out of five Catholics — are vulnerable to deportation or could lose at least one family member if the United States government were to deport all of those vulnerable to deportation without any change in law.

The report’s title is a reference to the biblical teaching that all Christians form one body, composed of distinct but interdependent parts, and that when one part of the body suffers, every part suffers with it.

finally read this piece I've had in a to-read tab for a while and when I tell y'all these two paragraphs gave me *whiplash* like, historical milkshake duck hammerandhope.org/article/robi...
screenshotted paragraph from the linked article, reading as follows:

Thirty-two years after the publication of Thoughts and Sentiments on the Evil of Slavery, the Rev. Jacob Gruber, a Methodist minister, stood trial for inciting the enslaved to mutiny with his sermon at a camp meeting in Maryland. More than 3,000 congregants, including about 400 Black people, most of them enslaved, gathered to listen to Gruber preach from Proverbs 14:34, “Righteousness exalteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” According to one witness, the minister denounced slavery as a “national sin” and called attention to “a great inconsistency in holding the Declaration of Independence in one hand and a bloody whip in the other, and the blood streaming from a negro’s back, literally cut to pieces.” At Gruber’s trial, one of his attorneys delivered a brilliant opening statement on freedom of speech and the Methodists’ obligation to oppose slavery. He also turned to the Declaration of Independence to criticize human bondage, which he argued had been imposed on the American people by the British “while we were yet in a state of colonial vassalage.” Slavery, the lawyer told the court, was “a blot on our national character, and every real lover of freedom, confidently hopes that it will be effectually, though it must be gradually, wiped away. … And until it shall be accomplished: until the time shall come when we can point without a blush, to the language held in the Declaration of Independence, every friend of humanity will seek to lighten the galling chain of slavery, and better, to the utmost of his power, the wretched condition of the slave.” Gruber was acquitted of all charges.screenshot of the next paragraph in the article, reading as follows:

The lawyer’s name was Roger B. Taney. He went on to become chief justice of the Supreme Court and the author of the majority opinion in Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857). By then, he no longer envisioned slavery’s inevitable demise. On the contrary, his ruling legalized slavery everywhere and declared Black people had never been citizens of the U.S. and possessed no rights whatsoever. As evidence, he cited, among other things, the Declaration of Independence. According to Taney, “the men who framed this declaration were great men — high in literary acquirements, high in their sense of honor, and incapable of asserting principles inconsistent with those on which they were acting. They perfectly understood the meaning of the language they used, and how it would be understood by others; and they knew that it would not in any part of the civilized world be supposed to embrace the negro race, which, by common consent, had been excluded from civilized Governments and the family of nations, and doomed to slavery. They spoke and acted according to the then established doctrines and principles, and in the ordinary language of the day, and no one misunderstood them.”

My god. Essential, horrifying reporting here.
A few days after the incident in which Amalia lost consciousness, Marcano brought her back to the clinic at Dilley. A staffer measured Amalia’s blood-oxygen saturation—which, in a healthy individual, is between ninety-five and a hundred per cent—and found that it was in the low fifties. “Such a low amount of oxygen going to the brain can, if it’s long enough, kill off parts of the brain—it’s really, really high-stakes,” Prantik Saha, a pediatrician who reviewed Amalia’s medical records, told me. “It’s shocking that this level of callousness and omission of care could occur.” Amalia was taken to a local hospital, where it became clear that she needed care beyond what the facility could provide. She was transferred to a larger hospital in San Antonio, where she was given five diagnoses: Covid-19, RSV, bronchitis, pneumonia, and an ear infection. She received supplemental oxygen and intensive care.
