I don't have many thoughts about Kylo Ren specifically, but every time there's discourse around why anyone would want to to REDEEM the VILLAIN when they don't DESERVE that it seems to miss the point of redemption stories in the first place. Calm down there Inspector Javert.

I imagine he thinks it will go just like demolishing the White House: they'll show up and start taking what they want, and dare Denmark to stop them.

The tragedy of Biden's presidency is not its lack of success, but how little its success was recognized. The claim Democrats don't have a policy program is false. Finishing the projects Biden began, working with Bernie Sanders and others, should be central to the project of the next president.

Joe Biden's underrated presidency
He's achieved a lot — with the notable exception of popularity.

There is enormous value for young people to watch those news coverage archives in real time. It should be required in political science classes and history classes to have any chance of understanding the 21st century. Whatever the fuck this is, it ain't it.

It's just kind of bizarre. You've already blown all benefit of the doubt and good will. People are going to be fleeing the district regardless now because they don't trust that this won't happen next year or the year after. So why not just rip the bandaid and get it over with?

I honestly have no idea how they thought it would turn out any differently than it has. If they were going to go with "we're going to barrel through regardless of whether people understand or not, so why waste time on effective communication" then drawing back now is the worst of all worlds.

In a weird way, closing schools is like withdrawing from Afghanistan. Everyone knows there's no workable alternative on the horizon, but they also know the blowback will tank the careers of everyone who implements it, so folks kick the can and hopes the next group will handle it.

audreyii_fic @audreyii.bsky.social · 14h
It's a laudable goal, but my sense was that instead of doing better communication, MPS decided "we know the pushback is going to be awful no matter what so let's just drive this through as fast as we can and minimize the number of events where people threaten to shoot us". That made it worse.

audreyii_fic @audreyii.bsky.social · 14h
The communication sucked, but if I understand correctly, the issue is that they can't fund specialists at low-enrollment locations. Emptier schools have to do without art teachers, music teachers, health counselors, etc. If they consolidate, all students get on-site access to the those resources.

Nor do gay men automatically sidestep misogyny. In fact some gay men are much more misogynistic bc they disdain women altogether.

Saint Paul faced similar pushback in 2022, but they ripped the bandaid off and got it over with. SPPS has many problems but it's overall a much healthier school system that MPS.

Part of the trouble (as anyone in education knows) is that closing schools is sometimes necessary and ALWAYS unpopular. Like, death threats unpopular. Eventually it's going to have to happen (hopefully in a more organized way than this) and punting because of public outcry isn't a solution.

Look at the shabby state and increasingly authoritarian trajectory of the country and ask yourself if we can endure 2 more years of a lawless Trump administration wreaking havoc with no check from Congress, then vote accordingly. This is not the time for a protest vote or purity politics.

It's easy to forget that the GOP establishment didn't at first. They thought he was a joke for most of 2015, and once he wasn't a joke they really tried to defeat him. But Trump said outright all the stuff they'd just been dog-whistling, and the base loved him for it, so eventually they went all-in.

I really hate this "things were always bad so it's pointless to say they're getting worse" take. It always depends on treating two things that are different as if they're the same, and presents the options as total revolution or nothing, the end result is always nothing.

In continuing #FuckICE news, SPPS just announced an enrollment shortfall of *hundreds* of students, many of which are ELL. The social and economic fallout of Operation Metro Surge continues to hit St. Paul and the Twin Cities at a time where these costs are hardest to bear, to boot.
Each October 1st, SPPS compares the number of students attending our schools with the enrollment estimates used to develop our annual budget. This year, our preliminary enrollment count shows that we have several hundred fewer students than we anticipated and fewer students attending SPPS than last year.

We know there are many factors affecting families and communities across Saint Paul right now. Operation Metro Surge, changes in immigration, and fewer new families settling in our community are among the circumstances reflected in our enrollment. Many of the students who are no longer enrolled with us are English language learners.

Behind every enrollment number is a student, a family, a teacher and a school community. We deeply miss the students and families who are no longer in our classrooms. Their absence is felt in our schools and throughout our community.

Huh. Apparently Katie Miller deleted this tweet that I had the foresight to screencap. Turns out I can TOO make things go viral on Xitter, even.
My RT of a Katie Miller tweet which RTed the NYPost coverage of the Ilhan Omar raid.

She said: Promise made, promise kept.
I said: Katie Miller is not going to do very well in a deposition.
