New British Sign Language signs for marine species are here, making conversations about nature and climate more accessible to everyone! 👋 The @edinburgh-uni.bsky.social Scottish Sensory Centre tested them out while cleaning oysters with #RestorationForth 🦪 #SignLanguageWeek #SLW2026

I learned about a brilliant project yesterday to support British Sign Language (BSL) users, creating new signs for scientific terms in chemistry, oceanography, data science & more. And they're fabulously descriptive. Do have a look and share! www.ssc.education.ed.ac.uk/BSL/index.ht...

So glad this is out! Still wish we had the data processed in time for @jmhenner.bsky.social to use but pleased to have his contribution in more ways than 1. See below for a brief commentary re Jon, deaf linguists & participating in SiL research and doing it in a way that disrupts or crips it all
Series of 3 images of Jon during Zoom session expressing full support for open access in ASLZoom window of 4 participants - top left to bottom right - Frank smiling, Jon with two-handed heart gesture, Leeann smiling and Julie holding heart over heart with 🥹 face Twitter thread showing Jon’s belief in open access work and recognition of the work it takes. Text:

Jon Henner @jmhenner - Paying participants. Assistants. Language Coders. Web coders. Web maintenance. Web systems. Technology.
This scales. If I want a project with 10 people I need to seed it thinking ahead.

I don't want to collect good data and let it die on a VHS tape on my shelf like two generations ago. It needs to be available and accessible.

Day 13 of posting cool mushrooms every day: Witch's Butter (Tremella mesenterica) is a brainlike gelatinous mass of a mushroom. It's one of the few mushrooms that will grow any day of the year, usually on softwood decaying logs. It's edible, however it has little flavor.
Several groupings of orange mushrooms are dispersed across a log. They look like someone chewed gum and spit it back out, but bright orange.
