Win Without War's statement in response to the announcement that the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan will be livestreamed by the U.S. government:
A blue, red, and black logo says "Win Without War." Below it is the following statement:

"A Public Military Execution Is Reprehensible. Impeach Hegseth.

WASHINGTON – In response to Secretary of Defense Hegseth’s announcement that the U.S. government will livestream the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, Win Without War Deputy Director Shayna Lewis released the following statement:
We utterly condemn Secretary of Defense Hegseth’s decision to broadcast the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan by firing squad. This is merely the latest outrageous action by the Secretary, and it is past time Congress held him accountable for his crimes and moral failures.
Hegseth must be impeached and lawmakers should soundly reject any Pentagon funding that could further embolden his catastrophic leadership.
Public executions were once a shameful staple of American life, particularly under Jim Crow. The last state-sanctioned public execution was in the 1930s. Looking back to that era, we are rightly shocked and appalled by the prospect of widely attended public lynchings that were once all too commonplace. Hegseth wants to numb us to that shock, doing his part to deliver on Donald Trump’s promise of a country where racialized and Islamophobic state violence is celebrated. It doesn’t diminish the gravity of Hasan’s crime to recognize and condemn Hegseth’s dangerous decision for what this decision is: sadism as government policy.
With Hegseth, enough is already far too much. The House of Representatives must adopt Rep. Massie’s articles of impeachment against Hegseth when it returns in November, and the Senate must promptly follow with a vote to convict and remove him from office. As and until they take those crucial steps, members of Congress — including those negotiating the National Defense Authorization Act and defense appropriations bills — should refuse to give the Pentagon one more dime.”

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854
Taxing Entrepreneurial Wealth: Evidence from
Norway, 2021-2025
Marius A. K. Ring
WORKING PAPER 35854|
DOl 10.3386/w35854
ISSUE DATE October 2026
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021-2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an "exodus" of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times,
2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners' firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners' savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms.
Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms,…

New statement from CIP President and CEO @nancyokail.bsky.social on the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.
Navi Pillay’s Nobel Peace Prize is a powerful affirmation of the value of multilateral institutions and the rule of law. It is also a well-deserved recognition of her work defending human rights and war crimes prosecution. The award brings renewed attention to the Commission of Inquiry’s finding that genocide was being committed in Gaza, sending a strong message that the finding and the people affected by it cannot be pushed aside by political pressure.

Also, I want to highlight this part of the case for all the pilots and avgeeks out there. I’ve heard ICE is doing this with manifests from a number of sources, but this is, as far as I know, the first confirmation. Really shows the complicity of the pilot-in-command. This was an Omni flight.
In the latest court filing, ICE officials did not deny any of his claims, and appeared to confirm at least one of them, saying the charter flight's manifest—a printed receipt given to pilots listing all passengers and crew on a flight—
"served as the travel document."

A core challenge of human relations generally and of pluralistic society specifically is being able to split the difference between hearing people express their fears as a concern about safety without sanctioning the impulse towards revenge, and the wider aperture on the story lets one do both.

The further one gets out from any Singular Day Tragedy, the more the aperture of the story told widens to include the aftermath, especially if the response to the tragedy is orders more magnitude of tragedy authored in the name of security but fundamentally animated by fantasies of revenge.
