We've fixed this one for the BBC. People's lives are at risk, and the French police certainly aren't "effective" at stopping that. But you know what would be? Safe. Routes. No one crosses the world's busiest shipping lane in a dinghy unless they have no other choice. So let's give them one.

People seeking asylum are overwhelmingly survivors, survivors of war, torture and trauma. Many are survivors of acts of hatred and hostility perpetrated against them here in the UK, from abuse, threats of harm, to real life violence includes acts of arson on their homes.
