🚨 CAMPAIGN WIN! 🚨 Government will now require tech platforms to take down intimate images shared without consent within 48 hours. This welcome move to protect women and girls rightly places the responsibility on tech companies to stop abuse rather than profiting from it.

Today following months of campaigning by survivor Jodie, @evawuk.bsky.social, #NotYourPorn, @claremcglynn.bsky.social and @glamouruk.bsky.social, a new law comes into force criminalising deepfake abuse. This is a welcome and long-overdue step for survivors, but criminalisation alone is not enough.
Stop image-based abuseOver the last 18 months, survivor and campaigner Jodie*, the End Violence Against Women Coalition, #NotYourPorn, Professor Clare McGlynn and Glamour UK have campaigned for action to stop deepfake abuse. Today, a new law comes into force making it illegal.

No one should have to worry about their photos being deepfaked. Tech companies must be held accountable for enabling and profiting from this abuse. Ofcom’s violence against women and girls guidance must be made a mandatory code of practice, with consequences for non-compliance.
One year ago today, the government announced it would make deepfake abuse an offence.

But this has still not in been brought into force. While we wait: Grok (X’s AI bot) is nudifying women’s photos without their consent

96% of all deepfakes found online are pornographic, and 99.9% of these are of women

Deepfake abuse has a long-lasting, traumatic impact on victims. It is a violation of our rights and restricts our freedomsBillion-dollar tech companies are enabling and profiting from this abuse. They must be held accountable.

Currently, tech platforms can choose whether or not to follow guidelines for tackling violence against women online.

This must be made mandatory, with consequences for those that don’t comply.Image description

🚨 After a week of announcements, the government's long-awaited VAWG strategy has finally been published. While there is much to welcome: a focus on prevention, the most cross-governmental approach seen yet, funding weaved into the strategy - there are some disappointments. 🧵

🚨 The government has today announced measures to strengthen relationships and sex education and better protect young people from misogyny and abuse. We welcome this focus on preventing violence against women and girls in today's long awaited VAWG strategy 🧵
Young people to receive relationships and sex education relevant to the digital ageThe government has today published its much anticipated violence against women and girls strategy, following an ambitious manifesto commitment to halve this abuse within a decade.

This is a landmark moment, with measures to strengthen relationships and sex education in schools and prevent violence against women and girls. It is really positive to see a much needed focus on prevention, and for relationships and sex education to be relevant to young people’s lives in the digital age.

But we must now see details of how this will be delivered, and funding that matches this ambition.16-18 year olds experience the highest rates of domestic abuse of any age group. But currently, relationships and sex education is not mandatory for students up to 18 years.

We know this education gives young people the tools to have healthy and equal relationships, so we must urgently make sure all young people can access it.

Incredible news! We strongly welcome plans to repeal the presumption of parental involvement, which will protect children from abuse & save lives. This is a long overdue change to how our family courts operate. Hugely grateful to Claire Throssell for her tireless campaigning @womensaid.bsky.social
Photo of Claire Throssell with text that says: After a decade-long campaign, the UK government has repealed the legal presumption of parental contct! What does that mean? Arrow to next slideWhat is the "presumption"? til now, family courts were legally guided to presume that it's in the best interest of a child to have access to both parents, even if one of those parents is a known perpetrator of abuse. Today the government has removed this harmful presumption.Presumption costs lives. 19 children have been killed by a parent in the last decade as a result of unsafe child contact arrangenents. All preventable. For years, child victims of domestic abuse have been silenced and failed by the systems meant to protect them.Women's Aid say: We're calling for a whole-system approach to centring children's voices in the courts and beyond. We want to see: children put first and the Harm Panel recommendations implemented in full. Regular and mandatory training for family court judges and agencies, developed with specialist domestic abuse services. A fixed system with real communication, coordination and accountability.
