It was *extremely* cramped last time a local friend and I drove there. His car thankfully is an old Lexus that's relatively narrow. I've heard from a few people that street parking is possible, but I hate hunting for street parking myself :p

The nearby parking garage is horrendous, but it's not a bad walk from the nearest Metro stop and an affordable Uber ride from there if you're carrying a bulky fursuit bag. I've gone a few times now and greatly enjoyed it! The drinks and food are naturally very expensive, but it's a neat social scene

Fortunately it doesn't really matter if you scorch clay, apart from the visual darkening. It is somewhat important to keep the inside of the bowl clean, though, especially if you smoke it a lot. Soot buildup (caking) isn't desirable with clay pipes, and can cause cracks

If the flame wasn't penetrating the tobacco inside of the bowl while you were pulling in air with the lighter overhead, you probably packed it a little too tightly for good airflow. Take some dry pulls through the stem before you light up again, and if it flows smoothly you're in good shape!

I use a zippo pipe lighter, the only difference between it and a regular cigarette lighter is the wick housing. It's meant to be held sideways over the bowl! A filter isn't necessary, but it can be helpful if the air passage is very small and easily clogged. That tends to be the case with clay pipes

Also a tamper is really only used for when the tobacco expands in a fully filled pipe once lit, to prevent the partly burned tobacco from coming out the top of the bowl. I like matches and lighters, though a proper pipe lighter is far better than a standard bic at not burning your fingers

Then light by circling the match or lighter around the inside of the bowl. It's normal to have to do this twice to get the pipe fully lit, depends on the tobacco. Gently draw air in, the longer draws the better at first, to help the smoulder reach near the bottom of the bowl. Hope that helps!

These are totally normal first time problems! Packing the bowl decently took me a lot of practice. A good way to start getting the hang of it is to use less tobacco at first, e.g fill about half the bowl. In any case, make sure you can pull air easily through the stem once it's packed
