Since I have insane comet envy, here's reposting of my shot of C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) from last year. Hopefully I will get to image one of these current comets at the EOM. #comet #astrophotography #astronomy #spacethings #fyp
This striking astrophotograph captures Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) in exquisite detail as it sweeps through a star-filled sky. The comet’s brilliant nucleus glows an icy blue-white, surrounded by a faint greenish coma produced by sublimating gases like cyanogen and diatomic carbon.

Its dust tail stretches diagonally across the frame, a luminous gray plume that gradually fades into the darkness. Subtle striations reveal the intricate flow of dust and gas sculpted by solar radiation and the solar wind, while variations in brightness hint at the comet’s rotation and outgassing jets.

Behind it, a dense field of stars — from warm orange giants to cool blue dwarfs — forms a glittering backdrop that emphasizes the comet’s sheer scale and motion. The image likely captures C/2023 A3 near its brightest phase, when it developed its long, fan-shaped tail and became one of the most anticipated comets of its generation.

It’s a portrait of motion, impermanence, and cosmic grace — an icy traveler from the outer solar system burning brilliantly for a fleeting moment before continuing its journey into the void.

Been working for quite some time to get a shot like this one. Loads to luck and planning after an utter failure the previous night. Can finally check this off the list. Captured Cygnus over our holiday rental last night. #astrophotography #space #milkyway
A wide-field night photograph of the Milky Way arching across the sky, with the Cygnus star cloud and its dark dust lanes clearly visible. A small dark-roofed cottage sits in the foreground on a grassy hillside, while the bright star Deneb shines above the galactic band. The image reveals dense star fields, reddish nebula patches, and intricate dark structures cutting through the glowing galactic plane.

New image! Desperately tried to get to 100 hours broadband but I'm quickly running out of actual night skies here in the UK and the moon isn't helping. Think this is finished for this year! 85 hours BB and 45 hours NB. Description in the alt text. #astronomy #astrophotography #space #fyp #askar #zwo
Highly detailed astrophotograph of the M81 Group captured in RGB and H-alpha (RGBHA), showcasing over 130 hours of total exposure time — 85 hours in broadband and 45 hours using a duo narrowband filter.

At the center is the majestic spiral galaxy Messier 81 (Bode’s Galaxy), glowing with a bright yellowish core and sharply defined, bluish spiral arms. The dust lanes are speckled with magenta regions (HA) indicating star formation. To the lower left lies Messier 82 (the Cigar Galaxy), appearing elongated with a vibrant magenta-red core due to intense hydrogen-alpha emission. Below and to the right of M81 is NGC 3077, a distorted dwarf galaxy with a pinkish hue.

The entire field is richly filled with faint galactic cirrus — wispy, smoke-like structures of dust and gas known as Integrated Flux Nebula (IFN), subtly illuminated by the collective light of the Milky Way. These ghostly veils drift across the frame, enhanced by the long integration time and narrowband sensitivity, giving the image a sense of depth and ethereal motion. Background stars vary in size and color, scattered across a black canvas peppered with additional distant galaxies and soft glow from hydrogen emission regions, all captured in extraordinary clarity.

Taken in June 2024. Farne Islands Northumberland. Heading Home. #photography #lighthouse #farneislands #fyp #peaceful #seascape #LongstoneLighthouse
Longstone Lighthouse, located on the Farne Islands off the coast of Northumberland, England, stands tall with its striking red and white cylindrical tower. The attached red buildings contrast sharply against the rugged, rocky coastline. Jagged rocks, speckled with patches of green moss, extend into the foreground, leading toward the calm, dark waters below. A lone seagull soars in the sky to the right, adding a sense of movement to the scene. The soft, diffused light enhances the texture of the rocks and the lighthouse, giving the image a painterly, slightly ethereal quality. This historic lighthouse is famously linked to Grace Darling, the lighthouse keeper’s daughter, who became a national heroine in 1838 for her daring rescue of shipwrecked sailors during a storm.

Here's 124 hours on the Dark Shark Nebula. 3 panel mosaic with 40 hours of duo NB data included for some HA in the Wolf's Cave. Finally done for now. This one took over a year. 😅 #astronomy #astrophotography #dso #space #spacethings #fyp #askar #zwo
Drifting through the vastness of interstellar space, a trio of enigmatic nebulae emerges from the darkness, sculpted by cosmic winds and the faint glow of distant stars. This deep-space image, captured over 100+ hours of broadband and narrowband exposure, unveils the haunting beauty of LDN 1235 (The Dark Shark Nebula), the Angler Fish Nebula, and the Wolf’s Cave Nebula—each a unique sentinel of the galactic sea.

At the heart of the composition, LDN 1235, the Dark Shark Nebula, stretches its dusty tendrils across the void, its shadowy form eerily resembling a deep-sea predator lurking in the cosmic abyss. This vast molecular cloud, a delicate interplay of starlight and dust, remains a silent witness to the slow dance of stellar evolution.

Nearby, the Angler Fish Nebula glows faintly, its subtle ionized gases hinting at the hidden forces sculpting its ethereal shape. Like its namesake from Earth’s deepest oceans, this nebula appears as a predator of the dark, its gaseous filaments illuminated by the faint glow of embedded stars.

Completing the celestial trio, the Wolf’s Cave Nebula resides in a hushed corner of the universe, its soft reflection and emission layers whispering of hidden stellar nurseries. Its delicate glow emerges through veils of interstellar dust, a reminder of the quiet but relentless forces that shape the cosmos.

This image is a testament to the perseverance of both the universe and the observer—over 100 hours of captured light reveal a rarely seen world, where cosmic creatures drift between shadow and starlight, forever suspended in the silent ocean of the Milky Way.

This is a deep-space astrophotograph of the Pleiades star cluster (Messier 45), a prominent open star cluster located in the constellation Taurus. The image showcases a collection of bright blue stars surrounded by wispy, blue-hued reflection nebulae. These nebulae are composed of interstellar dust that scatters the light from the hot, young stars within the cluster.

The surrounding space is filled with faint, intricate filaments of interstellar dust, forming a delicate, diffuse structure that extends across the image. The background is populated by countless stars, varying in brightness and color, adding depth to the scene. The contrast between the bright blue stars and the dark cosmic dust clouds enhances the sense of scale and motion, capturing the ethereal beauty of this well-known astronomical target.

The field is adorned with the university's purple and gold colors, featuring the word "HUSKIES" in bold lettering in the end zone. A vibrant rainbow arches across the sky above the stadium, adding a dramatic visual element. The large digital scoreboard displays the words "WELCOME to TOMORROW today." In the foreground, on the right side of the image, an elderly man wearing a purple shirt stands reflecting at the field, adding a human element to the otherwise still stadium. A nighttime gas station scene featuring a striking lineup of luxury sports cars, predominantly Ferraris, with selective color editing that highlights the red vehicles while the rest of the image remains desaturated. The well-lit station has multiple fuel pumps and a few people standing near the cars.

From left to right, the vehicles include:

Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano – A red grand tourer with a long hood, gold wheels, and a sleek profile. This V12-powered front-engine Ferrari is designed for both speed and comfort.
Porsche 718 Cayman – A mid-engine sports coupe with black wheels and an aggressive stance, known for its precise handling and balanced performance.
Ferrari 458 Italia – A mid-engine supercar with aerodynamic curves and sharp lines, one of the last naturally aspirated V8 Ferraris.
Ferrari 488 GTB or F8 Tributo – Another red Ferrari positioned further back, featuring a twin-turbo V8 engine and a design inspired by Formula 1 technology.
Ferrari F430 – A prominent red Ferrari in the foreground with smooth curves and an iconic front grille, a mid-2000s supercar that introduced electronic differential technology.
Jeep Cherokee – A silver SUV parked at the rightmost fuel pump, providing a stark contrast to the high-performance sports cars with its practical and rugged design.
The gas station’s background includes a UPS Store and a coffee shop, with trees and buildings visible under the night sky. Bright overhead lights illuminate the cars, reflecting off their polished exteriors. The image’s selective coloring draws attention to the vibrant red supercars, emphasizing their sleek and exotic nature against the monochrome surroundings.

What feels like relentless weeks of cloudy skies have finally opened up enough to collect some light on an ongoing project (my white whale). Here's the Wolf's Cave nebula. Still alot more NB data needed but its coming along nicely. Details in the alt text. #astronomy #astrophotography #space
This astrophotograph captures the Wolf's Cave Nebula (van den Bergh 152, VdB 152) in a combination of broadband and hydrogen-alpha (Ha) data. The nebula appears as a faint, dusty region set against a rich backdrop of stars, with dark brown and gray interstellar dust clouds weaving through the frame.

The most striking feature is the elongated, ghostly shape of the Wolf's Cave Nebula itself, located on the right side of the image. This reflection nebula is partially illuminated by an embedded star, creating a faint glow against the dark molecular clouds. Wisps of interstellar dust extend outward, partially obscuring the star field behind it.

Incorporated hydrogen-alpha data reveals faint red emissions, particularly along the right edge of the image. This suggests the presence of ionized hydrogen gas, contrasting with the cool, dusty structures dominating the scene.

Scattered throughout the image, countless stars of varying colors—blue, yellow, and white—dot the field, emphasizing the vastness of space. The overall composition showcases the intricate interplay between dark nebulae, reflection nebulae, and faint ionized gas, making this a complex and dynamic deep-sky scene.

A small palate cleanser. The feel of the open road! Taken in 2020 outside of Boulder City on the way down to Lake Mead. #photography #sunset #landscape #landscapephotography #fyp
This photograph showcases a scenic highway overlooking Lake Mead during sunset. The winding road, with smooth asphalt and bright yellow lane markings, curves gently along the rugged desert terrain. A metal fence lines the edge of the road, ensuring safety along the steep incline.

To the right, a rocky hillside with a rough, textured surface slopes down toward the highway. In the background, Lake Mead stretches across the horizon, its calm waters reflecting the warm hues of the setting sun. Low-lying mountains and distant ridges add depth to the composition, partially shrouded in mist.

The sky is painted in a dramatic blend of colors, with deep purples and blues transitioning into fiery oranges and soft pinks, casting a warm glow over the landscape. Wisps of clouds add movement and texture to the sky, enhancing the breathtaking view. The overall scene captures the contrast between the human-made infrastructure and the vast natural beauty of the desert landscape.

This image depicts a serene forest scene bathed in soft, golden sunlight. Tall, slender trees with vibrant green leaves form a natural canopy, filtering the light and casting dappled shadows on the forest floor. The trees have twisting branches that reach upwards, intertwining to create a tunnel-like effect. The forest floor is covered with a mix of dirt, scattered leaves, and patches of moss, with a well-trodden pathway meandering through. A few rays of sunlight pierce through the foliage, illuminating a small area in the center, adding a mystical, almost enchanted atmosphere. In the distance, there is a clearing where the trees thin out, revealing a glimpse of pale sky and open land beyond. Near the path, a small pile of branches and twigs is arranged in a teepee-like structure, suggesting a human presence or a natural shelter. The overall scene conveys a sense of tranquility, mystery, and natural beauty.
