I keep seeing this Semafor graph that seems to show the Trump administration’s effect on international visits is comparable to the pandemic. My first thought was “that can’t be true” and indeed it is not. This is monthly data. We only have to Jun/Aug 2026. The lines are over-fitted to the months.
Semafor graph with catastrophic drops.

what does it take to get a job at SpaceX? -total loyalty to Musk, above any form of professional ethics or personal morality -cool with racism, sexism, transphobia, etc -enjoys building the future of generated CSAM and non-consensual nudes -willing to sacrifice family, hobbies, identity to work

The distinction is worth making because if it was a one off joke we would not have to concern ourselves with the cabal of racists intent on destroying the lives of poor people

Musk did not destroy USAID as a joke, he put on a front of shitty humor and cringe to try (and fail) to hide his obvious racist and white supremacist beliefs that drove him to destroy the apparatus that kept millions of poor people alive

It’s a bit like gambling in that sure you’ll never get rid of the behavior entirely but at least you can make it harder to participate in.

As soon as I got to college at 18, it was immediately clear that frats and frat bros are repulsive and a breeding ground for sick behavior.

Kevin 🚀 @astro-kevin.com · 30/09/2026
Frats are outright evil and that they exist in open society is a moral outrage. Banning them and sending the rats scurrying underground is a good start.

It's kind of maddening to see almost no one with power and a major platform publicly wrestling with this. We're gonna have to talk about something other than gas and grocery prices at some point

Like sure Schiff could be doing worse (and has in the recent past) but come on man half the job of senator is messaging and most of them suck at it.

Kevin 🚀 @astro-kevin.com · 27/09/2026
Senators should be better at tuning their message to the platform they're on. Every person on bsky knows the illegal war in Iran is making fossil fuels more expensive. What we are interested in is, what specifically you plan to do to hold the people responsible accountable after the midterms.

Yep for sure, and I’d argue that even the opportunity cost of building data centers (vs climate tech/mitigation) is itself a bigger negative than the water usage

Today I saw the new 4 hour documentary Musk, directed by Alex Gibney. There were too many times to count that a sold out theater burst out laughing at Elon Musk, something he said or did, even sometimes just how he looked. I believe that is his worst nightmare come to life.

Space data centers fail the first design question of every space mission: “why *must* this be done in orbit?” The whole push is quite literally because musk and spacex know there isn’t currently enough demand to justify all of the money going into starship instead of falcon

Now that the truth has been leaked, I confirm that yes NASA makes spacecraft efficiency decision based primarily on “what would look coolest to aliens”

Voyager Instruments xkcd.com/3302/
3-panel comic. (1) [Person with shoulder-length hair gestures at diagrams on wall in front of table with three people.] PERSON 1: As the radioactive power source on *Voyager 1* weakens, we’ve been turning instruments off to conserve power. (2) PERSON 1: Only two instruments remain. Do we want to lose the plasma wave subsystem or the magnetometer? (3) PERSON 2 with ponytail: You know, if we just turned off Greg’s LED underlighting– PERSON 4 with short hair: Absolutely not. PERSON 3: Dammit, Greg. PERSON 4: I will *not* allow us to look uncool in front of aliens.

Last week, Earth Fire Alliance released first light images from the initial handful of FireSats. A constellation designed to monitor fire, globally, in near real time. earthfirealliance.org/news-article... The data are stunning, with 5 bands measuring 4 different wavelengths.
Three satellite images showing Dubbo, Australia in different wavelengths. The leftmost image is mostly green, revealing vegetation in a shortwave infrared, near infrared, and red light.

The second image is midwife infrared, colored dark red to light yellow. At this wavelength the image is a combination of emitted and reflected light, so the image reveals information about landscape composition. Urban areas and bare earth tend to be bright, dense vegetation and water dark.

The third image is thermal infrared, showing temperature from dark orange to light yellow. Vegetation tends to be cool, fields and sparse vegetation warmer.
