Not to take away from celebrating Carson, but she's a "former professor" here in large part because the university shut down her department and cancelled its classes. What pride does the institution claim now—years later—when austerity is forcing other scholars out? What does that 'pride' do?

I normally write a page-ish in my media journal about films/books/plays I take in, but I easily barfed out three pages on this one, and I could've kept going.

We had the chance to catch Paweł Pawlikowski's latest (Ojczyzna/Fatherland) on the big screen at VIFF last night! It was a full house, which felt especially poetic and surreal in the speech scenes...

Vancouver? I don’t know. I’ve pretty much only ever worked on IP reboots here. Which isn’t to say that influences and voice don’t show up “wearing” a brand…

There’s a Toronto animation aesthetic. It’s a pacing, it’s a shot language, it’s a humour, a way of telling the story that starts on the page, too…

The contrast between the state of the industry and the “risks” it was willing to take (/the opportunities it was willing to offer) in the late ‘90s and now is incredibly depressing. “The personal is universal” is just as true now as it was then.

Anytime I see the name Skydance, I always think that I learned the company name because that’s where John Lasseter wound up. His sexual harassment of Pixar employees is called “accused” and “alleged” on his Wikipedia page.

If there’s a silver lining to the current pendulum swing, it’s the light it’s shedding on things. On what we need to fight for. And of how the ball wasn’t so much dropped as it was never really held in the first place.

It’s wild to think back at what I guess you could call the heyday of EDI initiatives, and realize how hollow and half-assed they were at many organizations. A lot of talking, but not a lot of listening. Nor a lot of reflecting, and even less of a reassessment of how to approach things…

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."
