Chantal Tapé @astaunchcharacter.bsky.social · 02/10/2026As society adapts to what exactly? A future where everyone is on a GLP-1 for life? Even if you subscribe to the argument that food = fat, that does nothing to address the food systems issues of late-stage capitalism. 000
Chantal Tapé @astaunchcharacter.bsky.social · 01/10/2026I’m not just talking about fat shaming as a motivation. We live in a society where fat people are less likely to be hired, where they get paid less, where needed medical care is routinely denied on the basis of weight. We have literally made it challenging to live as a fat person in this country. 100
Chantal Tapé @astaunchcharacter.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Some are happy and largely side effect free. Others have significant side effects and need or want to stop. Many have the idea that they can take GLP’s briefly to “jump start” weight loss and then stop. I try to counsel against that because from what I’ve seen, the data doesn’t support that. 000
Chantal Tapé @astaunchcharacter.bsky.social · 01/10/2026I practice from a weight neutral perspective but I do prescribe them. Like anyone else, I have also inherited patients who are on them. And I have patients who really have no business being on them but who get them online or from unscrupulous weight loss clinics. 000
Chantal Tapé @astaunchcharacter.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Weight as a potential risk factor for disease is very different than weight as a disease, which is the line that is being pushed by many in the “obesity medicine” crowd, backed by the companies that make GLP-1’s. Eliminating fatness as a category is a eugenic project. 000
Chantal Tapé @astaunchcharacter.bsky.social · 01/10/2026I’m not convinced that people “love” the drug. So much as they, understandably, are looking for a way to live in a society that hates fat people. A society that offers them less and tells them that fat = lazy, fat = sick, fat = your fault. Meanwhile, the bar for what “fat” is gets lower and lower. 200
Chantal Tapé @astaunchcharacter.bsky.social · 01/10/2026What happens when your patients stop their GLP-1? Due to side effects, cost concerns, lack of access, plateau in weight loss, etc etc. Most will regain any weight lost. Weight cycling is a real, tangible harm that isn’t getting nearly enough attention. 100
Chantal Tapé @astaunchcharacter.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Also, calling fatness a “self-inflicted ailment” is disgusting and smacks of eugenics all the way down. We can promote good health without pathologizing people in larger in bodies, many of whom are healthy. We can talk about movement and eating habits without body shape being the primary endpoint. 100
Chantal Tapé @astaunchcharacter.bsky.social · 01/10/2026That may happen for some but it relies on the assumption that eating less produces lasting weight loss. The diet industry has been telling my patients that for years and the data just doesn’t support it on a population level. 100

Chantal Tapé @astaunchcharacter.bsky.social · 31/07/2026I love pills, love telemedicine — but I know many folks who just don’t want that experience. We have to be loud about the importance of in person care or we risk yet again leaving folks later in pregnancy out of our strategy. 010

Chantal Tapé @astaunchcharacter.bsky.social · 24/07/2026It’s infuriating because of the blatant transphobia, of course, but also to see doctors accepting their own incompetence in service of it.
