Sorry, @jamellebouie.net , but the framers were wrong about Athenian democracy. It was a highly sophisticated, stable regime that lasted nearly two centuries and produced a cultural efflorescence we are still benefiting from today: assemblingamerica.substack.com/p/why-greece...

The biggest thing missing from conversations about Democracy is the concept of deliberation. Democracy doesn't truly exist without mechanisms to thoughtfully deliberate. One of the things that makes sortition such a valuable tool is it allows for deliberation with large populations.

Break Up the Big Court

it is honestly remarkable how the average Senator is, I would argue, about 10 percent worse than if you literally selected them by lottery.

How about from parties and politicians altogether? Only then—and when we choose legislators by lot—can we have a real democracy.

Exactly why we need Citizens’ Assemblies on climate. France’s Climate Assembly (150 random citizens) recommended way more ambitious action than politicians ever would. When everyday people get real info without lobby pressure, they choose the planet over profits every time.
