As the UK marks 100 days until the Smokefree Generation law, new data from @ashorguk.bsky.social shows that 6 in 10 young people who have ever smoked regret it. Smoking remains a leading preventable cause of heart attacks and strokes, causing tens of thousands of deaths each year in the UK.

As ASH CE @hazelcheeseman.bsky.social says, smoking is an addiction that overwhelmingly starts in childhood, and rather than waiting for children to become addicted, the landmark smoke-free generation policy gives us the opportunity to prevent that addiction from taking hold in the first place.

Today is 100 days until the smoke-free generation comes into force on 1st January 2027, and new data from ASH shows that 62% of 11–17-year-olds who have ever smoked say that, if they could go back in time, they would not start smoking. 📆🚭

Whilst vapes are an effective smoking cessation tool for adult smokers, they should not be used by children or young people. Yet, they are being displayed in plain view of children, with bright and colourful packaging.

Despite this evidence, ASH data shows that 52% of smokers in the UK wrongly believe vaping is as harmful or more harmful than smoking. Concerningly, this could discourage them from switching to vapes as a way to quit smoking. Read coverage of the review in the BBC here:

A Cochrane review has concluded that vapes are a highly effective way to quit smoking, helping more people to quit than other methods. The review also confirmed that vaping is "substantially" less harmful than smoking. Read the review here: www.cochranelibrary.com/cdsr/doi/10....

There's been media attention today about a review by RCPCH highlighting evidence on vaping & the risks it poses to young people. On BBC Breakfast, ASH Deputy CE Caroline Cerny said young people shouldn't use vapes. However, it's important that vapes are accessible for adult smokers who want to quit.

@marykfoymp.bsky.social is right, we need to make sure that dodgy shops no longer operate on high streets as their existence fuels harm misperceptions. However, there is a balance to be struck and we need to make sure that vape shops that ARE supporting smokers to quit can continue to do so.
