y'all read any new(ish) books lately that blew your minds? I'm talking lush, ambitious sentences, big ideas? I have a couple of 15-hour flights bookending an *actual trip away from my desk*, and I intend to read published books instead of things I'm working on. Would welcome any recs!

I don't get embarrassed very easily but it always feels a bit strange to submit to literary journals. It's like, "Hey I don't know you but here's all my baggage, I'm sending it to you directly, and also here's a poem about snails for some reason."

So many of my brainstorm/structure notes like “is this anything?” and “what do we have here? What was I thinking? You were showing off and lost the plot”

Look, I like silence as much as the next writer, but I'm calling for a temporary moratorium on the words "quiet" and "quietly"

Wile E. Coyote, despaired, takes a bucket of paint and a brush and paints a beautiful two-bedroom house on a mountainside. He paints a beautiful coyote wife in the window, and two adorable coyote kids running around in the yard. He tries to enter this new coyote life, but it is inaccessible to him

Interestingly, the typeface used for the words "We Came In Peace For All Mankind," was Futura. It's an iconic geometric sans-serif typeface designed by Paul Renner in 1927. Honestly, a masterpiece typeface. Renner wanted to modernize typography by moving away from the heritage of calligraphy 1/2

I love this journal, and I love how Maureen's piece blends the sensory with the digital and finds the improbable thread between them. A brief, aching piece fully worth the read!

Just thinking this morning about how many women are forced to serve up the most intimate and horrible moments of their pasts because people blast through a veritable thicket of red flags in support of a political candidate, and in retaliation, they are smeared and harassed.

What’s the word you simply can’t learn to spell? all these years writing and editing and I’m still constitutionally incapable of typing the word “lavender” correctly on first try.

Sentences built like IKEA furniture. No craftsmanship. Pieces made of particleboard. Slot A with peg A, following instructions with the sense that there’s only ever one “right” way to do things. Cheap materials.

Solar generated more electricity than coal in May, amid Trump investment in coal plants
For now, coal is still the dominant fuel for electricity in Kentucky. Nationwide, though, natural gas overtook coal a decade ago. Renewables, including wind and solar, have surpassed coal in recent years.

A digital illustration of FBI Agent Dale Cooper as seen in the original series run of Twin Peaks. Drawn with heavy black outlines and colored with flat washy planes of color something like a coloring book. He’s shown from the waist up looking to the left of frame wearing a brown overcoat over a blue shirt and tie. His hair is black, shiny, and immaculate as ever. In his near hand he’s holding a white coffee cup and with his other he’s giving a thumbs up to someone out of frame. In the space to his left, lettering that approximates the bright green outlined sans serif used in the Twin Peaks opening titles reads ‘Maybe it will happen today’.

One of the best parts of writing is obsession, reading extensively around a story’s central concerns and/or philosophical/sociopolitical underpinnings, but the gearshift coming out of a project can be jarring. What do you mean I can read anything now, anything at all? Absolutely spoiled for choice!!
