The joys of self-editing my own works in progress
A Word document margin comment, from Ashley Strosnider, that reads only "Why tho?"

Definitely thinking a lot about lizards

Sorry, but yes, we did order a “Jalen Brunson MVP” pizza from our local spot. Does Brunson even like pepperoni, ricotta, vodka sauce, and hot honey? No way to know. I think I do now, though.

View from the very back row of a very small plane I got rebooked onto after much nonsense. Literature only, indeed.

Got a new-to-me vintage bag and am thrilled to discover The Stories of Breece D’J Pancake fits perfectly in the outside slip pocket. Every bag should have an easy-to-access pocket specifically designed to accommodate slim little story collections, imho

A small good thing: I finished this novel draft in 8 weeks. It’s possible! I let myself get it printed with the nice cover binding, as a treat. There’s a lot of work yet to be done, and after I let it collect dust for a few more weeks, I’m excited to step away from the desk to do this part by hand.
A printed novel manuscript sits on a writer’s desk with a pair of glasses and a ruler obscuring sensitive info. The top right reads “approx 65,000 words” and the middle reads “by Ashley Strosnider.”

I’m just an editor, standing in front of a bunch of writers, begging you to choose literally any other way to describe laughter.
Line graph from Google Books Ngram Viewer showing the frequency of the phrase “barked a laugh” in American English books from 1985 to 2019. Usage is nearly flat through the 1990s, starts to rise gradually in the early 2000s, and increases sharply around 2010. It peaks near 2016. After that, it levels off slightly but remains high through 2022. The data reflects a notable surge in usage over the past two decades.

Yesterday was my birthday, and I got to spend it and Christmas with my parents at their new house. It’s not the house I grew up in & I’m wretchedly nostalgic by nature, but it’s the right accessible home for them & this change is good & I’m so grateful to still have them & spend this time with them
