🔭 NGC 3521: Galaxy in a Bubble Image Credit & Copyright: Vikas Chander apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap25061...

Gorgeous spiral galaxy NGC 3521 is a mere 35 million light-years away, toward the northern springtime constellation Leo. Relatively bright in planet Earth's sky, NGC 3521 is easily visible in small telescopes but often overlooked by amateur imagers in favor of other Leo spiral galaxies, like M66 and M65. It's hard to overlook in this colorful cosmic portrait though. Spanning some 50,000 light-years the galaxy sports characteristic patchy, irregular spiral arms laced with dust, pink star forming regions, and clusters of young, blue stars. The deep image also finds NGC 3521 embedded in fainter, gigantic, bubble-like shells. The shells are likely tidal debris, streams of stars torn from satellite galaxies that have undergone mergers with NGC 3521 in the distant past.

Close-up with the Rosette Nebula (Narrowband Colour) - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - flic.kr/p/VuN7BQ

Visible here is a small portion of the large Rosette Nebula (NGC 2237), centered on its central cluster of stars; NGC 2244.
This large round nebula lies some 5000 light years away and can be found in the constellation Monoceros near Orion. In optical wide field images the entire nebula appears strikingly similar to the petals of a red rose, hence the name.
The image is constructed from exposures in three very narrow (3nm) wavelength bands corresponding to the emission profiles of ionised Hydrogen, Oxygen and Sulphur to form the resulting detailed and brightly coloured scene.
Several striking shapes can be seen here, many of which resemble animals of various kinds. In particular the figure of a leaping Cheetah is very obvious near the centre. These dark shapes are denser clouds of dust and gas, slowly being eroded away by the intense ultraviolet radiation from the young stars in the central cluster. These stars have themselves condensed out of the nebula relatively recently. The brightest cluster members, HD 46223 and HD 46150, are massive O-type stars with stellar winds and radiation powerful enough to have cleared the nebula's central cavity around the cluster.

New image processing techniques “refreshed” older Hubble data showing a portion of the Eagle Nebula. This structure is 9.5 light-years tall and 7,000 light-years distant from Earth, and is one of many nebulas in the Milky Way. Credit: ESA/Hubble & NASA. 🔭 🧪

A very vertical image of a tall, thin portion of a nebula that appears to stand like a tree. The top is made up of large brown and blue pale clouds and dust that look like voluminous hair. To the right of the clouds is a dark rugged shape, surrounded by a bright red light. Below the clouds is a dark stem, made of tendrils of dust, wrapping around themselves to the bottom of the image, where the tendrils widen and expand like a tornado-like dust cloud. The background has several stars of different colors and sizes, and the shade of the background changes from light blue at top to dark red at the bottom.

🧵 This spectacular image-- obtained by SOFIA-derived magnetic streamlines superposed on ESO, APEX, Chandra, and Spitzer images-- shows the warped magnetic fields of Centaurus A (or Cen A), an active galaxy in Centaurus. ➡️ apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap21042... 🔭 🧪 #extragalactic #Science

The composite image of the Centaurus A galaxy shows a complex visual structure, with distinctive features such as the central dust lane and the relativistic jet originating from the supermassive black hole, which can be highlighted as follows:
the dust lane cuts prominently through the center of the galaxy, appearing as a broad, well-defined, opaque band of gray. This band cuts across the image diagonally, creating a strong contrast with the brighter regions around it. The dust appears dense and opaque, partially obscuring the light from stars and other emissions in the central part of the galaxy.
The relativistic jet, originating from the supermassive black hole at the center, is visible as an elongated structure, extending outward from the nucleus. In the image, this jet appears mostly bluish-gray when crossing the dust lane, and turns orange outside and appears as a streak running away from the center, with a slightly curved appearance.
At its center, the galaxy has an irregular shape, with an elongated and distorted appearance, resulting from the collision between two galaxies. The central part appears dense and bright, with a vaguely elliptical structure. The colors are: white (visible light from ESO), orange (submillimeter emission from APEX) and red (infrared from Spitzer) that mix in a vortex of light and dust. The white lines of magnetic fields, detected by SOFIA, follow paths parallel to the dust lane in the outer regions, but distort into curves and tangles near the center, where the jet and the black hole influence the magnetic field. The image conveys a sense of cosmic motion, with the dust lane and the relativistic jet as the visual protagonists of this dynamic scene, against a black cosmic background full of bright points.

The Dawn of a New Era for Supernova 1987a - From Goddard Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/SxbhQJ

Three decades ago, astronomers spotted one of the brightest exploding stars in more than 400 years. The titanic supernova, called Supernova 1987A (SN 1987A), blazed with the power of 100 million suns for several months following its discovery on Feb. 23, 1987.

Since that first sighting, SN 1987A has continued to fascinate astronomers with its spectacular light show. Located in the nearby Large Magellanic Cloud, it is the nearest supernova explosion observed in hundreds of years and the best opportunity yet for astronomers to study the phases before, during, and after the death of a star.

"The 30 years' worth of observations of SN 1987A are important because they provide insight into the last stages of stellar evolution," said Robert Kirshner of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation in Palo Alto, California.

The latest data from these powerful telescopes indicate that SN 1987A has passed an important threshold. The supernova shock wave is moving beyond the dense ring of gas produced late in the life of the pre-supernova star when a fast outflow or wind from the star collided with a slower wind generated in an earlier red giant phase of the star's evolution. What lies beyond the ring is poorly known at present, and depends on the details of the evolution of the star when it was a red giant.

Churning in the Chukchi Sea - From NASA Marshall Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/284W6ga

Regardless of the amount of winter ice cover, the waters off of the Alaskan coast usually come alive each spring with blooms of phytoplankton. These blooms can form striking patterns of blue and green seawater, such as those visible in this image of the Chukchi Sea acquired on June 18, 2018, by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8.

Blooms are a common occurrence this time of year. But the regularity of the blooms and their simple beauty belie the complexity of this ecosystem.

Two main water masses flow from the Bering Strait and enter the southern Chukchi. One type, known as “Bering Sea Water,” is cool, salty, and rich in nutrients. This water fuels most of the phytoplankton growth, primarily diatoms, which are likely the main reason for the colorful green waters pictured here. (Sediments could also be contributing to the bright green areas.)

The second mass of seawater is known as “Alaskan Coastal Water,” which is warmer, less salty, and nutrient-poor. Diatom growth is usually lower in these waters, but coccolithophores can do well here. Some areas pictured here could contain this type of plankton, known to impart a milky turquoise hue to the water with their plates of calcium carbonate armor.

While experts expect blooms to consistently show up in these waters from year to year, the size is less consistent, and the reason is not clear.

The Pillars of Creation, seen here in mid-infrared by #NASAWebb, adds to decades of research about star formation by helping astronomers analyze the densest dusts and gases of the region, and improving the precision of their star-formation models: bit.ly/45ayCYi 🔭 🧪

Many layers and pillars of semi-opaque gas and dust overlay one another. These regions appear light blue and dark gray-blue. The first pillar starts at the bottom left and extends to the top right. There is one prominent red star, with tiny spikes at its tip. Lower on this pillar, there are several darker areas of dust that jut out, many with bright red stars that appear as small red dots at their ends. Below the top pillar are two slightly smaller pillars, both ending in dark gray-blue regions. The second pillar has a dark arch that looks like an upside-down L halfway down. The background of this scene is washed in shades of red. Toward the top center is a V shape. At its lowest point, the V is a brilliant red. There are only several dozen tiny bright white and blue stars in this overall scene. Larger stars appear redder and are embedded in the pillars.

This image of the Ring Nebula, taken by Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera, appears as a distorted doughnut. The nebula’s inner cavity hosts shades of blue and green, while the detailed ring transitions through shades of orange in the inner regions and pink in the outer region. The ring’s inner region has distinct filament elements. Stars litter the scene, with a particularly prominent star with 8 long spikes in the top right corner.

Colorful clouds of gas and dust crowd the image. Deep red and orange clouds surround the image's edges, with some violet in the upper left portion. Near the left middle, a region of teal and yellow shines.

A star cluster is shown inside a large nebula of many-coloured gas and dust. The material forms dark ridges and peaks of gas and dust surrounding the cluster, lit on the inner side, while layers of diffuse, translucent clouds blanket over them. Around and within the gas, a huge number of distant galaxies can be seen, some quite large, as well as a few stars nearer to us which are very large and bright.

A colorful, glowing nebula that reaches beyond the top and bottom of the image. This translucent cloud of gas holds wispy and thin filaments with hard edges in some places, and puffy and opaque in others. Blue, red, and yellow colors mix together, showing light emitted by different types of atoms in the hot gas. Scattered across the colorful nebula are bright and point-like foreground and background stars. The background is black.
