Jacek's chubby hands touched the stem gently. He didn't quite understand what mama was saying, but he had learned enough about her garden to know that you don't squeeze the stems of the plants too hard or they broke.

"Do you remember what this plant is, my little Hyacinth?" Mama always spoke in Eorzean when babcia wasn't there to criticize her accent.

"Issa hebbe-oar."

"That's right, it's a hellebore. Very good!" Mama tucked a strand of long hair behind Jacek's ear. "You'll be mama's helper when you're grown, won't you? You'll help me tend the garden, little Hyacinth?"

"Yah!" Jacek yelled, clapping his hands together.

It bothered G'raha that there were parts of Kiah'a that he would never understand.

G'raha had spent a hundred years suppressing his desires, letting them crystallize until the very concept of doing something for himself felt as foreign as his own limbs. When he returned to the Source and the tentative relationship blossomed into something more tangible, he knew that he could not let himself be swept away in poetry and hope. Even when they flew to the end of the universe and returned together, he told himself that this was not the end of the tale.

Happily ever after did not really exist. It was an ending that needed effort every day.

One thing that I had fun with in this story was having Koana and B'runi talk about their mutual asexuality without actually calling it that. And while normally I think the term "attraction" can be a bit too modern to use, it's because of that that it felt like a VERY good word for Koana to use.

Koana's nose wrinkled a bit at the reminder and shook his head. "Ah yes, I had forgotten," he said. "I am grateful that my position at leadership comes without such obligations. I do not envy them in that aspect."

B'runi tilted her head ever so slightly, eyebrows raised at his remark. "Is that so?" she asked quizzically.

"One needs to bear some attraction to others in order to perform that duty well, I presume," Koana answered. "I experimented in Sharlayan but found I had no desires for it."

"Ahh." B'runi rested a hand on her knee and swished her tail back and forth, the tip curling happily. "You are in like company then."

"My problem with what?" Gota'a asked, not getting up from where he sat. He knew exactly what she was about to scold him for.

"You can't talk to Raelthota like that!" Tora slammed her fist on the table to try and get a rise out of him. "You don't get to order people around just because," she paused and then lowered her voice. "just because we're in bed with each other."

Of course she would see it like that.

"That's not what…" he lowered the tome and set it on the table. "Seven hells. I wasn't ordering her around. I was critiquing her poor use of strategy. I simply suggested that she change her tactics to avoid the possibility of an ambush."

Unfortunately, Bram had slowly gotten sharper at recognizing when trickery was afoot. Hien would begin his usual tactic of digging in, picking and prodding until Bram's shoulders started to go a little taut, but more and more often he seemed to recognize that feeling at the outset and catch that Hien was deliberately messing with him. A shame, really.

“Not working this time,” he’d say with a shrug, immediately redirecting the wind from Hien's sails. “You do know that asking is also an acceptable way to get me to kiss you.”

An acceptable way, certainly, but not the way to get Bram to kiss him like that—all fever and passion, biting and grabbing. Like it was a punishment. That was a revelation he had to earn.

His tactics were forced to become less obvious. Indecipherable, even.

Since it's mooncake season, I thought I would mention that the honey cakes described in this fic are essentially "what if someone took a mooncake and gave it the gulab jamun treatment" :D

“Truth be told, I have a bit of a weakness for sweets.” Zhai'a pointed to a box of small hexagonal pastries decorated to resemble a honeycomb. “I am especially fond of the honey cakes they sell at Fullflower Comb, the apiary near Sweetbloom Pier—which is also where the mead came from, by the by. You likely passed it on your way here, if you took the ferry from the Lavender Beds.”

B’alith flashed him a conspiratorial grin, and silently filed away the newfound knowledge for future pantry-stocking occasions. “Well, then let’s spoil our dinners a bit and start with those.”

The cakes, he soon discovered, had not earned their namesake merely because of their appearance—they were practically swollen with honey, and unexpectedly heavy for their size. Sticky-sweet syrup leaked from the confection when he freed one from the box and bit into it, though he could do nothing to prevent it from dripping down his fingers while he was preoccupied with chewing. It was as tooth-achingly sweet as he had expected it to be, but the spices folded into the layers of flaky pastry were not terribly dissimilar to the ones he might have expected from a similar dish enjoyed in his homeland of Southern Thanalan: warming cinnamon and ginger, fragrant cardamom, the barest hint of black pepper. He could not deny that it was exquisitely made, even if it would not have been his first choice had he been left to his own devices.
