2 — Register. Pre-ARR, ~1,000 words.

Coeurlclaw angst abounds in this one as we learn what happens when someone gives birth to a boy. Featuring an entire cast of Keeper OCs. There will be a quiz.

CW: Implied infanticide, implied abuse (physical and emotional), discussion of a dead infant, brief suicidal ideation.

5 — Preservation. Post-game, ~1,300 words.

Written in the style of a report detailing artifacts found in the Swallow's Compass long after Fafnir has passed. One of my favorite styles for a piece of fiction, and where I at one point had five different tabs up researching for this.

8 — Strain. Pre-ARR, ~1,700 words.

Have you ever wanted an insight into Fafnir's life back in Doma? Now you can read at least 1.7k about it! But really, getting to write a some small fishing village dynamics and innocent toddler Fafnir was great.

18 — Reason. 7.0, ~950 words.

Consider this a 'missing scene' for Kiah'a's MSQ. I just think we should have been allowed to talk to Koana after his father died and had an actual conversation about it. Koana/Kiah'a.

21 — Better Late Than Never. 7.0+, ~2,800 words.

My longest entry, but by god did I pop off on this one. Sometime after the Coeurlclaw aunties move to Gridania, Kiah'a comes to visit his mother and little sister. Sunny is less than impressed with him.

22 — Train. 1870s AU, ~1,700 words.

Funny how both my Koana fics made it onto this list, but I had a ton of fun with this one and have to blab about it. The 'Wild West' period is one of my favorites in US history and it fits Koana so well. He gets to be stationmaster while Kiah'a (and the Scions) are bounty hunters. Just read it for me.

With a grand total of ✨25,654✨ words and 24 prompts written, September is in the bag! I definitely burnt out towards the end, but I am really happy with how much I did. Highlights/recommended reads later. More insights on individual graphs if you care to read the alt text 😅

Words per Day on a bar graph. The Y-axis goes from 0 to 3000 and the X-axis goes 1-30. The bars are colored based on the character POV, with Kiah'a as blue, Fafnir as dark red, Other as purple, Haurchefant as ice blue, Sidurgu as pink, and Multi as green (I couldn't get a legend to work on the graph).

My thoughts:
I am thoroughly surprised by how much 'other' is here, and REALLY surprised to see how much Sidurgu came through. I was a bit worried that I would end up just writing a bunch of Kiah'a or a bunch of Fafnir with no variation, and while almost all the fics are centered around them in some way I feel like I got a good number of POVs. Hilariously the longest fic (at 2,785 words) was from Kiah'a's sister's POV. That kid's got a lot going on lmao.

My thoughts:
Very surprised with the number of pre-2.0 fics I wrote. I did want to use this to write characters or events that didn't warrant their own fics and I guess that worked! Also realized that 3.0+ AU should actually be 4.0+ AU because it's Stormblood, but it's fine. Pretty happy with the variety I've got here.

My thoughts:

This was largely due to the fact that a lot of Kiah'a centric fills were from other POV, which is probably because while I love him it can be a LOT writing him haha. Also I was trying to write stuff that wouldn't usually go into a fic, so less WoL POV I guess?

29 - Layer It bothered them that there were parts of Kiah'a that they would never understand.

It bothered G'raha that there were parts of Kiah'a that he would never understand.

G'raha had spent a hundred years suppressing his desires, letting them crystallize until the very concept of doing something for himself felt as foreign as his own limbs. When he returned to the Source and the tentative relationship blossomed into something more tangible, he knew that he could not let himself be swept away in poetry and hope. Even when they flew to the end of the universe and returned together, he told himself that this was not the end of the tale.

Happily ever after did not really exist. It was an ending that needed effort every day.

23 - Egress Haurchefant prepares to join Fafnir on his adventures. Related, Camp Dragonhead has a new commander.

"Lord Haurchefant!" It was Corentiaux, who came with a handful of papers in one hand and a rather severe expression on his face. "I believe you have forgotten an important matter," Corentiaux stated plainly. He held the papers out, though Haurchefant knew what they were before he even saw them.

Fafnir peered at them. "Accounting reports?"

"Ah, where did those happen to run off to? I was under the impression I filed all of those," Haurchefant lied, scratching at his cheek. "I did just spend several moons in the hospital — must have slipped my mind."

"These are dated long before your recent stay," Corentiaux corrected. "As the commander of Camp Dragonhead, they are your responsibility—"

"Actually, I believe Emmanellain is legally the commander now," Haurchefant interrupted. "There was a ceremony and all."

22 - Train Koana waits for the train to arrive.

The heat was stifling, baking the long stretches of desert that lay out in every direction around the city. Patchwork pockets of shade attempted to provide some relief, and clusters of men and their horses followed their movement as the sun crossed over the sky. There wasn't a cloud in sight, only the occasional dark dot from a falcon searching for its next meal.

Koana felt a type of kinship with it, in a way, as he waited on the third floor balcony of the train depot. He was sweltering in his uniform, the weight of the fabric heavy on his shoulders and his jacket tight around his chest. He dared not loosen the collar. The physical discomfort was worth the authority it granted him.

He reached into his coat and drew his pocket watch out. The gold gleamed in the sunlight.

21 - Better Late Than Never Sunny does not quite get along with her brother. The feeling is mutual. CW: God's most uncomfortable family interactions.

That evening, as the sky was streaked with red and blue like Sunny's hair, she came downstairs to see Mama was already awake. The house was quiet, no conversation settling over the kitchen or footsteps creaking in the hall, and Mama was worrying her bottom lip the way she did when she was nervous.

The cause for that was a slim, blue-haired Miqo'te in pale blue robes with a missing arm.

Kiah'a sat at the kitchen table, an untouched mug of tea in front of him. Mama had a mismatched mug, her hands wrapped around it to hide the subtle shake that Sunny could see if she squinted. Kiah'a had his carbuncle by his feet. The creature looked a lot like a rabbit-dog, but apparently was made of magic. Sunny didn't really understand how it worked. It looked up at her and then sat back down, satisfied with what it saw.

There was no steam rolling off the cups. Sunny hadn't even heard the kettle whistle. How long ago had the others awoken, and why was she the last?

19 - Liminal Kiah'a isn't doing too good. Unfortunately, he's well overdue for a conversation.

Kiah'a spun around — or tried. There were no points of reference, so he may have held still for all he knew.

His head hurt. He looked down and saw his hands, his feet, his tail curling through the air — but no floor. He was bare to the world, but he was not even certain that this was a world. There was no sense in this dimension that he found himself in. Was he dead?

Wait, hands?

Kiah'a looked at his hands. Both of them. His brain felt empty. His blood ran cold. It had been moons since he last had two, yet they felt entirely normal. He turned them over. Besides the callouses from his lancework and swordwork, they were hale.

"Hey, listen!"

"I am going to kill him," Kiah'a said. Koana blinked as he looked up from his work. He reached up to adjust his glasses and smeared ink on his cheek. Kiah'a drew a cloth from a pocket and held it out. "I will or Wuk Lamat, but he will be dead within a moon. I swear it."

"That will not bring Father back," Koana whispered.

17 - Fret Kiah'a is handling things poorly.

The first night after G'raha's rescue from Emet-Selch and the Ascian's defeat, Kiah'a fell asleep atop Sidurgu's chest with his hand gripping G'raha's robes and tail curled around his leg. It was unusual and awkward, too many limbs squeezed onto a too small bed, but neither G'raha nor Sidurgu would deny Kiah'a his comfort.

The second night, G'raha went to slip out from the room as Kiah'a drifted into dreams. Kiah'a woke as the knob turned, looked at G'raha, and whispered, "Stay." G'raha sat in the armchair and watched Kiah'a and Sidurgu sleep.

By the third night, something was clearly wrong.

16 - Steel Relationship negotiation, of a type.

"I suppose we should talk," G'raha started, then stopped. The crystal in his arm groaned as he adjusted his grasp on his staff. "I apologize for deceiving you."

"Thank you," Sidurgu said, because there wasn't much else he could say to that. G'raha had apologized profusely to all of the Scions, but this was the first time they had had a moment between the two of them since the defeat of Emet-Selch and return of G'raha to the Crystarium.

That is, a moment without Kiah'a clinging onto them both.

"We are both dear to Kiah'a." G'raha's ears flicked in the air. Sidurgu was no expert in Miqo'te body language, but he could recognize signs of nervousness in any man. "I would not presume to intrude on your relationship, but it seems Kiah'a wishes to have each of us in his life."

"G'raha informed me that you are seeking your archon marks!" Alphinaud said cheerfully as he waved. Kiah'a bit back a sigh. It was not gossip if it was his comrades discussing things together, but he still felt disquiet knowing that the others spoke of him when he was not present. "Did you feel that some time off would be too relaxing for you after saving the world?"

"He means to say 'Hello, Kiah'a,'" Alisaie said, expression warm but much less overwhelming. "A pleasure seeing you, as always."

14 - Against the Grain Alphinaud looks for the Warrior of Light.

Alphinaud frowned. This was starting to be quite a conundrum. Was it worth alerting the others? No, Kiah'a never did much enjoy when the Scions were involved in his business. Yet this was a prime political opportunity and Alphinaud could not let Kiah'a miss it entirely.

"Hurry, Elizabeth! Else we'll be last in line and they won't have any soup left," a girl called out to her younger sister. Alphinaud felt a stir in his chest. His mother had used a similar line on him and Alisaie when they were young and reluctant to leave their books, warning them that the Last Stand would run out of food if they were not on time.

A lie, of course, but an acceptable one.

At a loss for what else to do, Alphinaud trailed several paces behind the girls. They turned a corner and he was about to follow when he heard a familiar voice.

"No pushing. There's enough for everyone."

12 - Fusion Haurchefant takes Fafnir on a date. Modern AU.

Haurchefant leaned forward in his seat. "You look quite fetching in your button-up. I do not know if I've said that yet."

Fafnir felt a bit like he was being constricted, not having worn anything more formal than a sweater for several years, but he took the compliment at face value. "You as well."

"Thank you." Haurchefant wore a proper suit jacket, dark blue bringing the best out of his eyes. He seemed far more at ease in the high-end restaurant, though Fafnir feared for his wallet.

If he couldn't afford it, he would not have asked you out, Fafnir told himself.

10 - Upbraiding Brief Haurchefant introspection.

The Central Highlands never got warm but the night was still comfortable as Haurchefant swung his axe over his head and through the log. It split in two, each end clattering onto the cobblestones of the courtyard. He huffed, sweat dripping down his brow.

It was of little consequence to throw the axe over one shoulder before tossing the two pieces of firewood onto the pile. Once they were secured, he took the next log in hand, placed it on the stump, and readied himself for the next swing.

The process was almost meditative, if not for the heat that still burned in his chest.

Bastard, one of the knights had taunted him. That was naught new. His fellow recruits had mocked him when he first began training, but now that he was assigned to the garrison only a few deigned him worth the trouble. Haurchefant himself would have found it amusing, if not for the words that followed. Did your mother charge, or was she taken for free?

8 - Boustrophedon CW: Trans feelings before someone realizes that they're trans. Complicated parent dynamics. Stubbornness runs in the family.

Fafnir reached the edge of Limsa Lominsa before he knew where his feet were carrying him. He stopped with his toes curled over the edge of the stone, the water lapping at the curb and wetting the bottom of his sandals. The sea breeze buffeted their hair about their face. Long strands of black and red covered their eyes and ensnared their horns.

And that was the rub, wasn't it?

You look unkempt, his father had insisted. Let your mother cut it!

But Fafnir liked the way it fell down their shoulders, like their bangs framing their face. He knew it was just hair, but the idea of shortening it filled him with repulsion. He didn't know why. He didn't like thinking about it.

"You are no coward, are you? Swim out to me! You can still touch the bottom, ancestors my witness," Sohta assured Fa Ning.

"'m not a coward!" Fa Ning shouted, though he didn't quite know what a coward was except something bad. He took a step forward, then another, and another, until the water was lapping at his hips. He held his tail in his hands, not out of fear of getting it wet but to comfort himself. He was getting old for that, his ba always said so, but Ba wasn't there to chide him.

There was still some distance between him and his cousin.

7 - Ignorance Is Bliss Or is it?

Kiah'a wishes that he didn't wake up with the taste of bile in his throat. He doesn't hear G'raha call for him, voice rough from slumber, as he leaps from the bed and runs for the washroom. He spits up nothing, at first, then the remnants of last night's dinner, then stomach acid.
