I was recently in The Netherlands & the first thing I noticed after getting off the bus from the airport in Haarlem was the quiet. A city of 170k people, at their central train and bus station, and as I walked to my hotel, all I could hear were people, bike tires on pavement, and birds. Glorious.

In 2013, San Diego closed the Plaza de Panama in Balboa Park to cars. 👏 Now, 13 years later, it still looks like a concrete landing pad. In about half that time, Paris turned one of their concrete-laden plazas into something much more desirable. Can we have some vision to add more beauty, #sandiego?

Amazing how this works. 72% less speeding at camera locations. Safer for everyone. Hey, San Diego, this would be within every driver’s control. If you speed, you’re helping to plug the giant hole in the city’s budget. Don’t want to help the city or pay your speeding tickets? Don’t speed. Win-win.

The best bike plan starts with a better car plan. Dutch cities don’t just graft bike lanes onto busy streets. They practice “ontvlechten”—untangling cycling and driving at a structural level by restricting car speed, volume, and access. Fewer conflicts. Calmer streets. Networks that actually work.

Amazing how this is covered. “Electric motorcycle” - was it an ebike or a motorcycle? “Both vehicles” - are e-bikes and trucks the same? “Allegedly ‘violated’ the girl’s right of way according to SDPD” - he was turning left. 2 kids. If only we had a way for teens to get places without cars.

Took a fall today in the bike lane on 30th St in North Park thanks to one guy partially blocking the bike lane and then another guy navigating by him to turn into a driveway cutting me off, forcing me to stop short and go down. Bumped and bruised, but ok.

A 🧵of thoughts: 1/ When I was a kid, our streets were calm. We had a small grocery store just a few blocks away, and my parents or grandparents often sent me on my bike to grab things. It gave me independence, taught responsibility, and saved them time while letting me burn energy and get movement.
