Just wanted to share this cool little snippet from "Dorrieal's" newest video. In this one, they showcase a really impressive glass refraction effect in #SuperMario 64 They're the same person that did the ridiculous but stupendously fun "Shotgun Mario" #romhack #retrogaming #N64 #romhacking #Mario

The Super Mario 64 Whomp's Fortress Fish Fountain saga has once again reached a new development! Every few years, new information surfaces about a mysterious object that has no code in the finished game but has slowly been discovered to have been a bountiful fountain of fish.
A history of the Whomp's Fortress Fish Fountain:
In 2007, the Toad's Tool 64 modding tool for Super Mario 64 was released, which was capable of showing all objects in the game. One of them (highlighted yellow) was an object with literally no code in Whomp's Fortress.
In 2015, a video of a 1995 pre-release version of Super Mario 64 surfaced that showed a fish jumping out of the water in that spot. In the finished game, fish have a 1/256 chance to appear everywhere; in this version it was just this spot.
In 2020, the famous "Gigaleak" event led to many of Super Mario 64's development assets and code surfacing. This revealed the code as it was before being removed: a fish fountain that would spawn fish continuously as long as Mario was inside the boundary of the object.
Finally, in 2026 more previously unseen footage surfaced of the same 1995 prerelease version that showed that at some point the fish fountain was also able to spawn the Bub enemy!
This was not even present in the leak! Will the fish fountain never cease to surprise?

Nvidia’s CEO can spout whatever technonsense he likes about regurgitative AI, I’m not going to dignify it by reading a fucking word. The conversation stops at the fact AI is toxic waste. Ethically, morally, financially, environmentally. You cannot rhetorically clear that checkpoint.

I was asked to give my thoughts on generative AI usage in games - here they are!
From the article:
"I think that until the bubble bursts, AI will be used by quite a few game companies, and perhaps even beyond the bubble," says Brandon Sheffield of Necrosoft Games, which released the RPG Demonschool last year. "Look, I am not a fool – I understand that AI has some uses. Primary among those being the devaluing of work, the cheapening of labour, the laying off of creatives, and the generation of busywork for humans to fix whatever AI generates."

"It's also useful for burning through water, raising the prices of RAM and chipsets globally, and poisoning anyone near the data centres that run them. So there are a lot of use cases for AI. From spurring on the death of the creative endeavour to dissolving our economy, AI is absolutely gangbusters at what it does. We don't use it in our studio though."

a nice thing about when the internet was a bunch of little sites and servers was that it was a lot harder for governments to pressure "the chat provider everyone uses" to implement age verification. you wanna pressure 300 separate IRC servers? good luck with that. but one company? easy

Talking in a group is hard
The Illusion of free choice meme

The cow is an autistic person trying to engage in a group conversation

One side is end up interrupting to say something
The other side is keep waiting for a chance to speak that never seems to come

Both lead to You feel awkward and disconnected from the conversation

The reason why RAM has become four times more expensive is that a huge amount of RAM that has not yet been produced was purchased with non-existent money to be installed in GPUs that also have not yet been produced, in order to place them in data centers that have not yet been built, powered by infrastructure that may never appear, to satisfy demand that does not actually exist and to obtain profit that is mathematically impossible

I think it's important not to misunderstand what these social media platforms are. They are not public arenas where we bravely take on reactionary forces in honorable combat. They are apps that expose you to stress and thereby simulate the feeling of having done something useful

they didn't need AI to make Silksong, it just needed some deeply insane guys to have a blank check for living expenses until their next thing was done, I think we should try doing more of that instead

turns out, DS upscaling/filtering is complicated supporting things like 3D upscaling, or hi-res rotation/scale, exclude upscaling/filtering the final video output (with, say, xBRz) so graphical elements would need to be upscaled/filtered individually

In Super Mario 64, parts of Lethal Lava Land are actually made out of leather, which simply appears to be stone due to the low resolution of the textures.
