From today's reflection on Thérèse of Lisieux in the Universalis app: "We can’t all hug lepers or go off and become missionaries and martyrs. But we all do have daily opportunities of grace. Some of them may be too small to see, but the more we love God, the more we will see them." ⚓

Commemorating Thérèse of Lisieux - a wonderful companion through doubt and darkness. Accidentally/synchronously one of the psalms I prayed this morning (BDP) was 87(88) “…my one companion is darkness.”

When I made an off-handed remark about my greying hair earlier today, my new GP (who is also greying, though much more uniformly) informed me that he is actually younger than me. I know I was bound to get here eventually, but...

My (Chinese) partner is fond of telling a Chinese joke that basically goes "if you want to root out an American spy, just say American place names until someone goes 'OH I'M FROM PHILADELPHIA (or whatever), HI!'" Anyway, now she jumps up and down if North Carolina is mentioned. Opsec shattered.

Just coached my cat through the process of hunting and eating a bug, with enthusiastic praise and a reward. Kind of like trying to teach theology to a baby or Reddit, but I succeeded.

One of my favorite cases of someone being Wrong on the Internet was a very earnest, very confused vegan who was telling people how cruel honey is; and it eventually turned out they thought honey was made by putting bees in a centrifuge and spinning them around until they threw up.

"and windy" is probably understating it a little bit, but what do I know #hunkerdown #gsowx
A screenshot of the weather.gov current observations at PTI Airport in Greensboro, NC. My cat has been taking a huge nap all afternoon and evening with few interruptions, which means later on she's going to wake up and be a real energetic goblin. A truly rollicking little goober. A rumbustious ball of energy.

My life has improved considerably since I moved to Greensboro, though I do miss my old church. But you know who has REALLY benefitted from the move? My cat. Bigger bed, able to sleep next to me when I nap, she can SUNBATHE EVERY DAY, she chased and almost ate a lizard. Her life *rocks* now.

RIP 847 years ago Hildegarde von Bingen, abbess, mystic, theologian, musical composer, astronomer, pharmacist and doctor, and among many other things inventor/discoverer of the sacred language “Lingua ignota”, who died #onthisday in 1179 CE. (Pictured, her conception of the world as a "cosmic egg")

TW: POTTY WORDS ‘Pee’ meaning “urinate" was originally just the letter P. The P was short for ‘p*ss.’ Also, 'p*ss' originated in Latin, and is thought to be an onomatopoeia for the sound it makes.

In undergrad at Charlotte, I knew lots of students from overseas, and the most common sentiment I heard from them was that they felt like NC was a "greatest hits" version of the US. Mountains, foothills, coastal plains, beaches, cities, rural areas, etc. A bit of everything + great food.

Pretty sure it violates international law for me to be forbidden from installing curtain rods for the purpose of having blackout curtains in my bedroom. Every human being has the right to an afternoon nap without getting blasted in the face by sunlight filtering through their blinds.

Young folks don't really understand just how batshit insane we Americans went after 9/11. I always say that the best way to compare our before/after psyches is to watch the first and second seasons of 24. But if you're pressed for time, this'll do. www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaQB...

This is the sort of story that Bluesky mostly seems to ignore but I guarantee has large political ramifications in real life. Rural America is getting hosed by this administration from all sorts of angles and that won't go unnoticed. MAGA's understanding of "rural" is an exurban poser.

I'm kind of hung up about the fact that Dolly never hid her faith. She was just as open about that as everything else, and it drove her to actually love people, not to judge them and wrap it in theological bullshit and pretend it was love, or to demand people believe what she did. She just loved.

⚓ (from "Love, The Law of Life" by Toyohiko Kagawa)
An excerpt: "Religion is not weak self-satisfaction. Would-be religious people who take selfish satisfaction merely in dressing up in their best clothes and going to worship on Sunday have no genuine religion. If that is what is called Christianity, then there is nothing else as weak as Christianity.

True religion, true Christianity, is nothing else than a means of life. It is the entrance of God's power into sinful souls. If it be not courageous, sturdy, and burning like a flame, it is not real religion. It must dare to rise bravely, though it must suffer, though it must be fated even to bear a cross."
