I started daycare at 2, and in those early memories I just remember me being me and others being them. It wasn’t until 1st grade when a teacher singled me out and I couldn’t conform to what she wanted that I realized everyone else could. Thankfully my mom backed me, and I rarely felt like I was bad.

We went to see Spider-Man: Brand New Day last night, and I’m still ruminating on the effect it had on me. It’s a Spider-Man movie! But I found it to be a surprisingly emotional treatise on loneliness in American culture. I loved it, unabashedly, and was a crying mess for most of it.

Today I performed the annual photos with a homemade sign and bike ride to school with my now 4th grader, followed by the annual trip to the bike shop to figure out what went wrong with it while it was in the shed all summer.

At that point our youngest was medically complicated and we didn’t know why, so we didn’t know what would happen if they got Covid. We stayed home in lockdown for 2+ years. Those kid vaccines saved us, I was not well while experiencing that stress.

My sister was just visiting with my niece and nephew, who are about the age my children were in March of 2020. Over the few days of adventuring with them, I felt the grief of our two years at home settling in my chest, and it has yet to depart. How different would our lives be now without that time?

As the world catches up and sees The Odyssey, I’ve been geniunely surprised by people not liking it. I had one overall issue with the structure, but in the end didn’t care. It’s honestly nice to be reminded that you can like/dislike different things from your people without it being high stakes.

I made my first DCP (digital cinema package) as a colorist this week, and was able to test it today- and it worked! The blacks were black and the sound was excellent. I am so relieved 😅

Youngest child has been choosing music videos when it’s their turn to pick what to watch as a family, and they loooove Sabrina Carpenter. I have to say, her videos are pretty incredible! I especially appreciate the unique cinematography and color grading. And the chain of dead men.

The idea that we shouldn’t speak ill of the dead seems ridiculous to me. What more important time is there to set the public memory of the good or bad a person has put into the world than when they die. It’s the gift we give to those we loved, and the bill due for those who made others miserable.

I just got my first Easter egg ever of all time and I have to share- In The Boroughs, Art has a crow friend named Brooks. The name Brooks stuck out at me, until I finally remembered. There’s a character in Shawshank Redemption with that name. And what was one thing he was known for? Loving birds!
