An unprecedented happening: I came out of a heat wave with a massive CFS/ME flare that kept me mostly in bed for 10 days. Then I came out* of the CFS/ME flare with a full first draft of an unplanned novel. *not really, I'm still in the flare, but the novel is a real thing that did come out of it

The final story in Saros SF #5 is "This Was the Planet of Sound" by @improbablerex.bsky.social Editor @arielmarkenjack.bsky.social says it's "simply a perfect story in its own right. This is how I want to feel when I read short fiction."
"This Was the Planet of Sound" by Rex Burrows: singing seas / searching shrieks / expectant hush

However, this last example brings to mind other primates, in particular the chattering species that delivered us—and themselves in turn—into catastrophe and collapse and ruin. This was their favored range as well, so we must humbly beg your forgiveness. We have no wish to dwell upon these sounds. We will speak of them no further.

I'm so excited to have a story in this issue! I grew up reading and being altered by Moore's stories in my parents' motley and battered collection of old SFF anthologies so it's very special to me to get to be part of a tribute to her.

The 6th story in Saros SF #5 is "Gardenias Under a Temporal Window" by @kaunvijaya.bsky.social Editor @arielmarkenjack.bsky.social says it "drifts by as a wisp so delicate I didn't realize until a while after it was finished how powerful a storm of emotions it contains."
"Gardenias Under a Temporal Window" by Vijayalaxmi Samal: the past is present / she can fix it / but I’m right here

Things are difficult at home nowadays. I come back, snow-dipped, blue-skinned, to find my mother has slipped away, out of the time stream. She stands at the window, gripping the curtains and listens. She tells me she can hear conversations from ages ago, but they keep passing by her.

Lots of spooky things happening recently and I realized it's been a while since I've talked about my first book on here. BE SCARED OF EVERYTHING is a collection of over two dozen essays on horror. It's got chainsaws, it's got blood. It's got witches and UFOs and Led Zeppelin. It's got death.
The book BE SCARED OF EVERYTHING: HORROR ESSAYS by Peter Counter. It is standing upright on a white wooden bench next to a little ghost figurine.

This is such a long shot but does anyone else here remember a mid-2000s music blog by someone calling themself Ex Lion Tamer (of course of course) who posted a lot about old synthpop and post-punk albums? They shaped my taste in music at an impressionable age and their influence lingers to this day.

The 5th story in Saros SF #5 is "[Redacted]" by @spencerwriting.bsky.social Editor @arielmarkenjack.bsky.social says it "pulls off the magic trick of doing something formally clever without straying from the goal of building up to a hefty wallop of emotional impact."
"[Redacted]" by Spencer Nitkey: erosion / you can't tell anyone / the thing is me

In the quiet, it takes from me. First it takes the word . So I can tell no one what it does to me. It takes and then it takes , where angels live. It is not from . I met Marjane Satrapi in the mid-2000s when she did a lecture at my uni while extremely hangry and needed a guide to the nearest vending machine for a desperate snack. "Solitary, Not Alone" by Robert Helfst: blue jays (?) / deep breaths / follow the psychopomp

When I’d found this house for sale as a much younger man, before I’d bullied away my wife and son, I was taken with how many blue jays I saw flitting through the woods. I still find peace in this place—though I am solitary, I am not alone.

Downloads of FF#27 continue to be sluggish, which is a shame because I think it's a really top notch issue. Anyway, as punishment you must suffer additional promotion. Go read at www.fusionfragment.com/issue-27/
One of those trope promo images, with the curly arrows pointing to fun tropes, with FF#27 in the center. Lemme go counterclockwise here and tell you the tropes, starting at the top:

-Free to read
-Pretty much every character in it is not completely OK
-Invisible lions
-Death by plant
-The liquid ones are watching you right now!!!
-I really want you to read it. Yes, you specifically. The others don't matter to me. Not like you do.
-That "we're here to have a bad time" Trent Reznor meme.

The 3rd story in Saros SF #5 is "Root Words" by @yasmeenfahmy.bsky.social. Editor @arielmarkenjack.bsky.social says: "A wonder of efficient worldbuilding. This story reveals so much of itself in so few words, and does so very beautifully indeed."
"Root Words" by Yasmeen Fahmy: metamorphosis / linguistic detectives / mercy, mercy, mercy

Dr. Al-Hamid morphed into a mass nearly fifteen years ago in 2187.
It was concluded, at the time, by both us, his colleagues, and a reputable body of international experts, that Dr. Al-Hamid, as he had been known, was gone. Not a haphazard determination, as some gossip suggested; our team spent months prodding the thing, which, though it moved in place, appeared unresponsive to our stimuli. Meals left nearby remained untouched. Verbal, visual, and electrical signals sent received no answer. It only writhed soundlessly, subsuming bits of dust, yet never changing from its brown-beige color or chest-freezer dimensions.
