when the author is talking about slavery (in any society) it sometimes comes off as this weirdly woke version of what Calvin Candie types in the Antebellum South said

granted, no human being is totally inert and automaton-like. but the "agency trap" comes out very clearly when the author is talking about people who are quite plainly oppressed and frankly lead highly constrained lives

I’m not going to read anything and skip over the racism to give my assessment. the presence of the racism taints the work. it’s not an isolated thing. it’s not just an element. it informs the writer’s whole point of view. I don’t think of it as just a “blind spot”, not anymore!

Very little. The Holy See is (adjusted for inflation) the single biggest funder of astronomical research in history. As for Galileo, he was found guilty of suspicion of heresy, spent one day in gaol, and the rest of his life living in a palace, and continued to publish heliocentrism around Europe.

at last, we have invented retrophenology from the classic Discworld text Don’t Invent Retrophenology
Retrophrenology:
It works like this. Phrenology, as everyone knows, is a way of reading someone's character, aptitude and abilities by examining the bumps and hollows on their head. Therefore - according to the kind of logical thinking that characterizes the Ankh-Morpork mind - it should be possible to mould someone's character by giving them carefully graded bumps in all the right places. You can go into a shop and order an artistic temperament with a tendency to introspection and a side order of hysteria. What you actually get is hit on the head with a selection of different size mallets, but it creates employment and keeps the money in circulation, and that's the main thing.

there seems to be a point to most Chotiner interviews where the subject goes “oh no” and the fascinating thing about this one is that I’m not sure Spinotti ever gets there
“Triumph of the Will” is very controversial, but you can’t deny that as a piece of filmmaking it is a very impressive achievement. You can like something without agreeing with its politics.

Yes, probably so. I might’ve liked if the film could have been a little more about her activities and achievements, which are described in the end titles. But, also, our operation was limited to twenty days, and to two or three days after Donald went into the White House. Maybe it would’ve been more interesting if it was really about what she’s done as First Lady.
