PM Carney announced a massive increase in drone production -from 2,000 to 2 million in 2 years. Canada's joint operation command are gaming out scenarios for combat on Canadian territory. We pray it will never come to this but Canada is preparing for all eventualities. youtu.be/Z6TVVnPk4Ws?...

#OTD in 1992, Dr. Mae Jemison launched into orbit as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour making her the first Black woman to travel into space. An incredible life: + Physician (M.D., Cornell 1981) + Peace Corps Area Medical Officer in Sierra Leone & Liberia #WomenInSTEM 🧵
A classic NASA color portrait of Dr. Mae Carol Jemison, the first Black woman in space, captured in her official astronaut attire. She stands confidently in the center of the frame wearing a vibrant orange NASA flight suit with the American flag patch on her left shoulder, a blue-and-red NASA worm logo on her right, and a name tag reading “MAE JEMISON” above a mission patch. A large circular mission insignia for STS-47 (“Gibson APT Brown / Lee Davis Jemison Morgan”) is visible on her chest. She holds her white-and-black astronaut helmet with both hands in front of her torso, her short dark hair neatly styled, and offers a warm, radiant smile that conveys pride, determination, and joy. The background is a softly blended blue studio backdrop evoking the vastness of space. The composition blends technical precision with personal warmth, celebrating her historic 1992 flight aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour as Mission Specialist, where she conducted experiments in materials science and bone cell research. The image powerfully symbolizes her groundbreaking contributions to space exploration, diversity in STEM, and her lifelong commitment to making science accessible to all.A color portrait of Dr. Mae Carol Jemison, the first Black woman to travel into space and a pioneering engineer, physician, and advocate for science education. In this warm, studio-lit photograph from 2013, she appears as a confident woman with short, stylishly layered dark hair, smiling directly at the camera with a bright, engaging expression that radiates warmth, intelligence, and approachability. She wears a soft blue V-neck top, large silver hoop earrings, and a striking black cord necklace featuring a prominent circular turquoise pendant that rests at her collarbone. The background is a smooth, neutral gradient, keeping the focus entirely on her poised and professional presence. The overall composition is intimate and celebratory, conveying quiet strength and accomplishment while highlighting her enduring role as an inspirational figure in STEM and in women’s history.

On the 25th anniversary of 9/11 Canada is being openly threatened by the United States. They have forgotten our immense outpouring of solidarity. We must remember the other 9/11 - Sept 11, 1973 when the US overthrew the government of Chile. Lessons learned. No pasaran. youtu.be/BMO9EnpHYUA?...

Some trees are more than hedge anchors, landmarks in the lane. They stand out as guardians, green monarchs of their kingdoms. At twilight there is often a sense of them wishing to speak of what they have seen – whether to give a blessing or warning is hard to tell. – #DAKilroy, 1982

Danish author Karen Blixen (known by several pen names including Isak Dinesen) died #OTD in 1962. Best known for "Out of Africa," an account of her life while in Kenya, and for one of her stories, "Babette's Feast." Both were adapted as films & each won Academy Awards. #BookSky #LitSky #FilmSky
A black-and-white portrait of Danish author Karen Blixen (1885–1962), celebrated for her memoir Out of Africa, framed with a distinct white Polaroid-style border. Positioned slightly angled in the center, Blixen is shown from the waist up, looking directly forward with a soft, knowing smile and an engaging expression. Her dark hair is pulled back, framing her face, and she holds a pen between her hands as if caught in a moment of reflection. She wears a light-colored turtleneck sweater under a dark knitted cardigan buttoned halfway. The warm, intimate indoor setting includes a subtly patterned wallpaper and a framed picture hanging on the wall behind her. In the top-right corner, an inset color poster of the 1985 film adaptation Out of Africa shows Meryl Streep and Robert Redford sitting in a vast green landscape under a bright sky. The overall composition captures a nostalgic, intellectual mood, celebrating the author's lasting literary and cinematic legacy.

Today's answer to the question what is Hookland?
What is Hookland?

Hookland is England as seen from the ghost train.

It is a fierce refusal to let psychogeographers tell you that when you talk about spirits of place you can’t really believe in them. It is all the books you borrowed time and time again from the library as a child – encyclopaedias of horror films, Usborne’s Worlds of the Unknown UFOs and Charles Berlitz’s The Bermuda Triangle.

It is walking home through the woods in November mist and feeling that the place has monsters, not the sort they made into Aurora model kits, but old, nameless things that are fed by the fear you’ve had of this place since that murder a few years back. It is the terror of living in a haunted landscape. It is the delight of living in a profoundly haunted landscape. Hookland is the place that you can almost allow yourself to believe in magic again before realising it is a territory you already inhabit. Shared space where all the broken memories of childhood are resuscitated and walking alongside you.

It is knowing the names of Soviet spacemen orbiting above and feeling the youthful power if recognising which mushrooms are poisonous. It is sneaking into fields to release crows from cruel traps and thinking up mad schemes to raise money to buy fireworks when the air becomes rich with the intoxicating smell of bonfires. It’s being more scared by gaudy movie posters for films that you haven’t ever seen than being afraid of the things your parents constantly warn you about.

It is knowing that everywhere is layers of story, layers of memory and realising you may be the ghost of someone else’s future.

It is a French radio station on AM, full of songs you hear and instantly love, but will spend the rest of your life trying to remember what the title was, which band it was.

On its jagged rocks, its snaring brambles, fragments of ripped cloth that you know are clues to something you have forgotten. Something important you cannot unlock.

It is home.
