A hike along Lake #Vierwaldstättersee 🇨🇭. In Switzerland, there’s always a railway line nearby. The train pictured here at #Flüelen, at the southern tip of the lake, is today’s train #19, a #Zurich to #Milan service, worked by an #FS 🇮🇹 #Trenitalia #ETR610 tilting train in the new #EuroCity livery.

Starting into the weekend with a hike to the 12th century #Pfeffingen🇨🇭Castle south of #Basel. Its position high up above the #Birs Valley allows for nice views, of the #Jura-Bahn railway line, among other things.

The “Hellas Express”, in #Skopje 🇲🇰 in May 2011 - a modest affair, just two cars, on a daytime service to #Belgrade 🇷🇸. It once used to be a #Dortmund 🇩🇪 to #Athens 🇬🇷 long distance train with couchettes and sleepers. Travelling time was about 50 hours (usually more) for a distance of about 3,000 kms.

#Rijeka 🇭🇷 in autumn 2012. A train from #Zagreb has just arrived. The #HŽ Class 1061.1 electric dates from the 1960s. Originally numbered JŽ 362, these 3kV DC locos were of Italian design. They were withdrawn from service later that year I believe, when the line was re-electrified at 25kV AC.

#Liège Guillemins 🇧🇪 in spring 2002: an #InterCity to, most likely, #Cologne 🇩🇪 is making a station stop here. The train is hauled by an #SNCB #NMBS HLE 27 electric as far as #Aachen Hbf, where a #DB loco will take over. The car positioned right behind the Class 27 is an #I11 type driving trailer.

A common sight on European rails: #Siemens #Vectron multi-system electrics, with a range of on-board safety systems, able to operate in various countries. #İzmir 🇹🇷 #Alsancak station in June 2010. A #TCDD overnight service has arrived from #Ankara, hauled by a Class DE22000 diesel. Engineer and Conductor are shaking hands. This is what railwaymen and -women do in many countries, at the beginning or the end of a shift, wishing each other safe travels.

Weekend in Valle Vigezzo, where the little trains of the #Centovalli🇨🇭#Vigezzina 🇮🇹 railway, from #Domodossola to #Locarno operate. Some regionals on the Italian side are still being worked by the lovely ABe8/8 #SSIF units from the 1950s. They’ve got opening windows, a delight on a late summer day.

Hauled by a Class (6)193 #Beacon #Vectron, it includes couchettes, an iconic ex “Type P” stainless steel sleeper, and a “Bimz” seat car with opening windows, still displaying its light blue #InterRegio livery.

#Vienna #Ottakring 🇦🇹 transport hub earlier today. Tram line 46 at street level and U3 on the “1st floor”. This is actually a stub, adjacent to the subway’s western terminus station. The consist changes tracks and reverses without passengers on board. There’s also an S-Bahn station right next to it.

Last night on an #ÖBB 🇦🇹 #Graz to #Vienna domestic #InterCity. The train included #SBB🇨🇭#EuroCity #Transalpin cars. Originating in #Zurich, they were (re-)used for a Vienna round trip. As a consequence, the #DiningCar was Swiss, the crew and the menu Austrian. Enjoyed a Wiener Schnitzel for dinner.

#Lupoglav 🇭🇷 is a major stop on the #Istria railway line to #Pula, and still a quiet place this afternoon. A single #HŽPP Class 7122 railcar is awaiting further duties. Built in 1980 by #Fiat, this unit originally served as #SJ 🇸🇪 Class #Y1. This is why it’s nicknamed “Šveđanin” by local railfans.

Going through pictures taken in #Istria a couple of years ago. This one dates back to June 2022, and I took it one evening at #Buzet 🇭🇷 station. The train is a Slovenian Railways #SŽ 🇸🇮 Class 711 railcar, working a #Pula to #Divača international service, with connections to #Ljubljana from there.

Between two #trams, there’s always a bar, or the “Bar alla Tramvia” at #Opicina 🇮🇹, for that matter. This is the upper terminus of the line climbing up here from #Trieste. Both are just wonderful, the tram with its #funicular section, and the bar. Highly recommended!

Over the scenic #ÖBB #Tauernbahn 🇦🇹 line. “Dos is da Radlzug” according to a local, a train with plenty of space for bicycles and generous dwell times at intermediate stations for loading and unloading the bikes. And it’s got #FensterAuf opening windows. What’s not to like.

#Salzburg 🇦🇹. The #ÖBB #Nightjet from #Brussels is about two hours late. (We had to be re-routed inside Germany because of a line closure, and had to wait for an engine driver, I’m told.) Another crew change here at Salzburg. The sleeping car attendant is serving breakfast in the cabin. Nice scenery.
