Thank you - I wondered what that sham £850m represented or could be compared to. Turns out it’s more than the total income of most clubs, and 30% of MCFC’s own. (I still say it’s the lying to the PL and the other clubs that’s the most egregious sin, but there’s no denying these are material sums.)

“Bongo” Ballpoint pen, pencil, watercolor, acrylic paint, and a little colored pencil.

Our man is in trouble this time, reader. Art supplies are scattered around a painting of an abstract cityscape. On the canvas we see a man in a telephone booth making a frantic call to his cat, Bongo. In the foreground, an answering machine is taking his voicemail, [Leave a message at the beep] --- “Bongo, Daddy got stuck in the painting. Go get help, Bongo.” Bongo stands at the base of the easel looking at the phone. Her tail in the air and ears perked up. Whether she’ll be able to help is open to interpretation.

Artist’s note: One of my favorites from the Spooky Pants book. I was playing around with the idea of a painting coming to life (like that guy in Ghostbusters 2) and kind of fumbled my way into this version. I really draw a lot of corded phones. I won’t stop.

‘The Invite’ is fantastic. I can’t remember the last movie I saw where the dialogue was quite that good. There’s often two or three characters talking at the same time and it all feels completely natural while also being hilarious. Bravo Ms. Wilde 👏🏻

Sometimes I forget that not everyone knows that Prince had a period in the late 80s when he was quite enamored with Chicago house music, and he created (at least) a gospel-tinged house album, for which he tried to enlist Mark Moore of S’express, Patti Labelle for vocals, and maybe William Orbit.

“I don’t want to leave national pride to the wrong people. I’d like to reclaim the flag for myself and for us. I want us to wave it in a way where no one thinks, ‘What’s wrong with you?’ But rather, people get the feeling that you're happy, and understand how lucky you are to have been born in, raised in, or moved to this wonderful country. Can you be proud to be German and still be open, diverse, kind, and friendly? Can you have compassion? I'm 100% sure, yes."

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

Unlike so many others, the @financialtimes.com nails the "OMG, 1.5℃ is gone" message: "Temperature overshoot requires urgent action" Yep. And every 0.01℃ matters. Reminds me of my NYT oped with @costasamaras.com: "The widely recited '12-year deadline' is wrong — and right." gwagner.com/12years
UN report: temperature overshoot requires urgent action to keep warming in line with Paris accordWith children, days might last forever, but years fly by. Something similar applies to climate policy. The current days of delay and debates can seem to drag on forever, but the next presidential election is right around the corner, and so is 2030. Concrete, realistic deadlines focus the mind and jump-start action. And jump-start we must.

Integrated assessment models make contact w physics, hilarity ensues: It's one thing to say "IAM negative emissions are unrealistic" - but needing to produce largest global carbon capture facility every ~36hrs from today through 2050 to hit lower end of net zero goals does put some mustard on it.
From https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/2753-3751/ae987b

Achieving gigaton rates of sequestration in 2050 as most energy system models suggest would require building 250 Gorgon-scale sequestration projects every year between now and 2050, based on realized injection rates of about 0.4 Mt y−1. Compounded over a 25 year buildout to 2050, this yields ∼2.5 Gt CO2 y−1 of cumulative operating capacity, consistent with the lower end of net-zero sequestration targets. Realistic planning across diverse geologies must assume modest injectivities of 0.2–0.5 Mt y−1, consistent with a majority of on-going projects (Ringrose and Meckel 2019). At this rate, achieving even the lower end of projected sequestration—1 Gt y−1 by 2050—would require drilling thousands of wells each year until 2050. For comparison, the total number of active drilling rigs (onshore plus offshore) in the US at the end of June 2026 was 581 (Hughes 2025). The drilling activity alone needed to achieve projected levels of sequestration—2–5 Gt CO2 y−1—would be larger than the entire existing oil and gas industry.
