A perspective view of a river valley, with the lower elevation parts represented by a lidar hillshade (from open access BC Lidar portal) and the remainder from the ESRI satellite basemap. Various features, including a landslide and ancient meanders on the river terraces are visible in the lidar but not easily interpreted from the satellite imagery.

HERE IT IS! In August 2025, a massive landslide brought a big chunk of mountainside into the Tracy Arm fjord in Alaska, causing the second-largest tsunami ever recorded. My latest for @eos.org is the story of the forensic investigation, and why the culprit is climate change: 🧪

A landslide in Tracy Arm Fjord in Alaska created the second-largest tsunami on record. A new analysis links this abrupt event to the retreat of a glacier and, ultimately, to climate change.
