In "Synthesizing Sex/es Across Scales and Lineages" we name how "specialized" concepts can be broadly useful in countering our mammalian biases and introduce a graphical system for mapping anisogamete-production strategy across levels of modularity. doi.org/10.1093/icb/... @sicbjournals.bsky.social
Fig. 1 The top row of the figure is the key. A box on the left describes the five levels of organization shown in the figure. The first three levels can be independent or semi-independent and are, from the top: genetic individual (G),
connected colony (C), and individual body (B). The last two levels
are not independent: body subunit (L2) and body subunit (L1). The rest
of the key describes the drawing system used. A single line connecting
circles at different levels of organization shows that the higher level
includes the lower level, a double line shows that the higher level
equals the lower level. Different types of conspecific organization
are encompassed within rounded rectangles. Numbers within circles at
the same level of organization (e.g., 1, 2) indicate sequence. Gamete
production type is indicated by circles with the following characteristics:
female only is white; male only is black; sequential has two black
quarters and two white quarters; simultaneous is grey; and unknown
is a dotted circle with a question mark. Organisms depicted in the
middle row, below the key, have up to three levels of organization
and do not have body subunits. Organisms in the bottom row have up
to five levels of organization and have at least one type of body subunit.
Information about each organism depicted is provided in the caption.

I found the Miles books in high school, and am on yet another listen through them. I think it is important to think of the context they were written in to understand some of their edginess. While I’m more of a fantasy than sci-fi person, I never got into her other books, but I should try them again.

Why is there "no consensus" about sex in biology? Turns out, we're using seven different concepts. In "Evolution, development and the incoherence of sex" we name & elucidate these concepts. With Karen Warkentin and Jay Falk @jjinsing.bsky.social @sicbjournals.bsky.social doi.org/10.1093/icb/...
The cover of the article, in Integrative and Comparative Biology. The image caption is "Examples of seven biological phenomena sometimes called sex and the evolutionary relationships among them. The seven sex concepts are depicted with images: 0) horizontal gene transfer, 1) meiosis and syngamy, 2) anisogamy, 3) the gametes produced by an individual, 4) traits often associated with gamete production, 5) processes that bring gametes in proximity to facilitate syngamy, 6) processes/behaviors/traits derived from sex5.

For folks asking why bother commenting because the OMB won't care: comments help build cases for the courts by explicitly laying out harms. That's why it's really important to have your comments be as specific as possible. Also, contact your senators and reps! They actually do care about this.

Going to #SICB? attend s4 www.xcdsystem.com/sicb/program... Sex across origins: Questioning animal-centric assumptions & developing integrative frameworks Organized by M. Aramati Casper, aramaticasper.weebly.com Jay J. Falk jayjinsing.github.io Karen M. Warkentin, sites.bu.edu/warkentinlab/
Sex and the repeated origins of sexes are key sources of biological diversity, contributing to enormous variation in how organisms reproduce. Yet our conception of sex/es is disproportionately shaped by animal models. We need broader comparative approaches and collaborations across organismal silos to develop more general, inclusive frameworks. This symposium convenes researchers working on protists, plants, fungi, animals, and theoretical models to engage with the complexities of sex and reproduction, aiming to distinguish shared principles from taxonomic idiosyncrasies, highlight fundamental differences and open questions, and generate new frameworks for understanding sex in biology. By fostering integrative dialogue across disciplines and taxa, we hope to advance a more inclusive and accurate understanding of reproductive diversity across the tree of life.
