it’s #ToothyTuesday! some of my fav teeth are colugo lower incisors. these teeth are pectinate or “fan-like,” exhibiting many long, thin projections used for grooming! while colugos are sometimes called flying lemurs, they’re not actual lemurs: lemurs = primates, and colugos = dermopterans!
This image depicts the anterior, or front part, of the mandible, or lower jaw, of the colugo. The three incisors on each side of the jaw - especially the middle two teeth on each side of the jaw - are pectinate, or “fan-like” in form, with tooth crowns exhibiting many long, thin projections that colugos use for grooming. In gregarious species, aggressive interactions often mediate the establishment of social rank and dominance hierarchies. Following the assumption that females and males compete under different selection pressures, many studies examine aggression and dominance in each sex separately. However, social selection pressures such as competition for resources or social status may influence the sexes similarly, and more work is needed to directly examine the role of sex in aggression and dominance. To address this, we compared aggression levels, choice of aggression targets, and dominance hierarchies between sexes in captive, mixed-sex groups of highly social monk parakeets (Myiopsitta monachus). We examined interactions at the individual, dyadic, and group levels in 5 groups of 10 individuals each. We asked whether sex predicted aggressiveness, choice of aggression targets, and social rank. We found no evidence that one sex was more aggressive than the other. In most cases, sex did not impact the choice of target in an aggressive interaction. The sex of an individual did not significantly predict the rank they achieved in the group; females and males were equally likely to be high-ranked. Overall, we found that sex had limited impacts on aggression and rank in these mixed-sex groups. Our study provides new insights into social aggression and dominance in monk parakeets by examining both sexes and highlights the importance of studying sex similarities and differences within complex social environments.

The two with black rims on their crests are Guianan Cock-of-the-rocks, and the three with darker wings are Andean Cock-of-the-rocks.

‘The Red Ghost’ This piece is based on a legend from Arizona that is both fantastic and partly factual. It’s too long to post here, but I absolutely recommend looking up the history of the US camel corps in the 1800s and The Red Ghost. I wanted to show both aspects of the story in this piece!
A red camel ghostly apparition with a golden skeletal rider in a starry Arizona desert setting. A more realistic camel with a skeleton tied to its back is silhouetted against the moon on a sand dune filled with camel skeletons, and a turkey vulture waiting off to the side.

Illustration of a kelp forest in a teal ocean, rays of golden sunlight streaming in from above. Fish are swimming about, and near the bottom of a prominent kelp strand, a partially obscured leopard shark leisurely patrols the underwater forest. The palette predominantly features warmer teals, red violet, and gold.A California sea lion rendered in rich brown and orange tones rests upon a rock in teal shore waters below a softly glowing orange sky. Its slender head is raised to look over its back and to the right while a large crest of white sea foam frames its figure.Rendered in a rough painterly style, a shortfin mako shark leaps from a calm ocean tail over head, sea foam trailing its body in a loose arc. The shark, looking nearly metallic, is rimmed with orange light as a pale yellow sun hangs in a hazy orange sky, framing its streamlined figure.A caribou stands low in a field awash in autumnal oranges and yellows. Its head raised slightly, it looks off to the side while a pair of tall, sweeping antlers rises from its head, a bright red crown of newly hardened branches. Velvet still clings to the antlers in patches and tatters.
