NEW: The big new Aaron Sorkin film The Social Reckoning opens tomorrow with a plot centred on Facebook whistleblower, Frances Haugen....but we need to talk about *another* Facebook whistleblower, Sarah Wynn-Williams. And why Zuck is gunning for her.. 1/ www.youtube.com/watch?is=NP3...

Nice! Sorry to get technical. What camera body have you got that PC-Nikkor mounted to? I use a Canon TS-E on my GFX 50 SII.

Very much so and I will definitely try for more melting 👌

Yeah, you are not wrong. The comments were about the aesthetic driving the idea rather than the other way around. The melted image was one of those very happy accidents.

Critique raised the question of why pinhole, why glass plate, why long exposure? All valid questions. Knocked up a GFX version of a test subject. 8mins with 24mm TS-E and lots of ND
A black-and-white long-exposure photograph captures a serene landscape with a grassy field in the foreground, sloping slightly upward toward a dense treeline across the center horizon. The trees feature rich, textured foliage. Above the woodland, dramatic rays of light radiate outward and upward across the sky, creating a striking fan-like pattern of alternating light and shadow streaks. The smooth blur in the sky contrasts with the sharp detail of the grass and leaves, giving the scene an ethereal, dramatic mood highlighted by deep grayscale contrast and fine atmospheric texture.

blatant ripoff tbf. Might try longer "focal length" to lose the shore and then we should full on dodgy copy

First rule of pinhole club - if you think you are close enough, move half the distance closer. This was before I moved closer... Managed not to melt this one though 😆
A black-and-white, minimalist photograph of a serene coastal landscape divided into clean horizontal layers. The top half of the frame features a vast, pale gray sky hovering over a razor-thin horizon line. Below the horizon lies a calm band of smooth, misty water meeting a textured pebble beach. The foreground showcases detailed pebbled ground interspersed with dark, low sand mounds and subtle wet patches reflecting light. The image is enclosed by a raw, dark analog film border complete with delicate specks and dust marks, evoking a timeless, vintage aesthetic.

Went to coast for tests for a project I'm doing. 15 min exposure with some sea traffic. Managed to melt the emulsion in the drier which is nice! Glass plate pinhole #photography
A black-and-white, minimalist long-exposure photograph depicting a seascape divided into horizontal bands. The top portion features an expansive, pale sky fading downward. Beneath it, a razor-thin, perfectly straight horizon line separates the sky from a smooth, foggy body of calm water. The bottom third of the frame shows a dark, textured sandy shore fading softy into the water's edge. The photograph is framed by an artistic dark border showing physical film artifacts, specks, and slight distortion along the bottom right edge, accentuating a vintage, analog aesthetic.

The powerlines are very faint in this one, making this image less strong. Worked as a test though, with the sun coming out meaning I had to adjust and reduce the exposure on the fly. #photography
A monochrome landscape photo captured with a black border, showing an expanse of open land under a large, overcast sky. The lower half of the image features grassy, coarse vegetation in the foreground that transitions into a flat, tilled or stony field in the midground. The horizon line cuts straight across the middle of the frame. Faint power lines stretch horizontally through the upper right portion of the pale sky. The overall composition is minimalistic, muted, and stark, emphasizing the open rural terrain and subtle textures of the ground beneath a light, hazy atmosphere.

3min exposure with the wind blowing the trees. Bright late afternoon sun. A lot of contrast, but at least we got something. #photography
A monochrome, vintage-style photograph capturing a wide grassy field gently sloping upward toward a dense treeline. The foreground consists of textured, patchily lit grass stretching across the lower half of the frame. Beyond the lawn, a continuous row of lush, leafy deciduous trees spans horizontally across the background, creating a natural forest border. The sky above is bright, clear, and featureless, contrasting against the dark foliage. Framed with a thin, irregular black film border, the image has a rustic, nostalgic aesthetic with soft lighting and deep shadowed tones throughout the landscape.

Some quick and dubious maths gives rough exposures from 45s for bright sunshine rising through 45min and 1hr 30min for shade factoring in a suggested doubling of exposure for reciprocity. Hopefully sufficient light to test over the weekend 😜

The corn is gone Dev-harvested, bare and desolate Suffolk skies (not haiku) #photography
A low-angle, wide shot reveals a flat, brown, tilled agricultural field stretching along the bottom of the frame. The vast expanse above is dominated by a vibrant blue sky dotted with scattered, fluffy white cumulus clouds. Multiple sets of dark power lines crisscross diagonally across the upper portion of the frame, spanning from left to right against the bright sky. Sunlight evenly illuminates the rural landscape, emphasizing the stark, minimal composition divided cleanly between the texture of the cultivated earth below and the open atmosphere crossed by utility lines above.

#TBT to this from 2012 in honour of Michael Gove starring as an invasion-battling leader in Sky's new show The Wargame. If you don't know what or who this comic is about... just count yourself lucky and scroll on, no worries.
[Opening scene is WESTMINSTER, LONDON. Over Downing Street a huge ALIEN SPACECRAFT hovers, silent, still, filling the whole sky a la Independence Day].

[Cut to INSIDE 10 DOWNING STREET. The (then) prime Minister DAVID CAMERON is looking out of his office window at the ship.]

VOICE FROM OFF-SCENE, BEHIND CAMERON:
Prime Minister…

CAMERON [addressing the person behind him, still keeping his eyes fixed ahead in dread at the spaceship]:
Yes?

[We see the speaker is MICHAEL GOVE, then Education Secretary]:

GOVE:
Let me do it.

CAMERON:
For God's sake, Michael, you're the Education Secretary! You've never flown a fighter plane in your life!

GOVE:
But I know I could do it, David. I could fly a fighter plane into the big space- ship...

...and shoot all the aliens.

CAMERON:
But you have no military training!

GOVE:
David

I haven't told you this, but...

I used to be a journalist. For The Times.

[Cameron reacts, turning to look at Gove with awe and respect, as if only now truly seeing him for the first time].

GOVE:
I wrote two articles about planes, David.

I've got strong opinions about aliens.

I know I can do this job.

[Cut to a title card panel]:

AND SO:

[Then cut again to Cameron on the roof of Number 10, watching a Michael Gove pilot a fighter jet up towards the spacecraft, and then completely miss it, careering towards Earth, as Cameron buries his face in his hands].

[Ends]

Of all the weird recurring motifs of the stories people tell me about the AI labor wars, the *weirdest* is when bosses demand to be reassured that their contractors and workers will *absolutely* use AI to get the job done.
A worn out keyboard, cropped over the bottom left modifier keys. Posed in the image is a bearded prophet in Bronze Age robes, arms uplifted in worship.

Once you understand the corporate culture of AI hyperscalers is everyone cooking their brains by locking themselves in the bathroom, holding flashlights under their chins, and saying "Aaaaaaaaaay Eyeeeeeee" until they wet themselves in terror, things snap into focus: pluralistic.net/2023/06/04/a...
A cutaway view of a stone tower containing an elaborate water-powered medieval geared machine. Rising out of the machine is a rainbow-tinted, pixelated God with the robes, beard and all. To one side of this scene is a cluster of tiny people in Jesus-era robes, falling about themselves in religious ecstasy all over a stone staircase, atop of which stands a robed priest with his hands upraised. The background is a set of shining golden rays, emanating from pixel-God.

Dog walk scenes (Suffolk) #photography
A eye-level, wide shot shows a dense, horizontal swath of mature, golden-brown corn stalks stretching across the middle of the frame under a dramatic sky. The dried cornstalks feature curled leaves, upright tassels, and visible corn cobs hanging along the stems. Below the crop, a flat strip of dry, light-brown mowed grass runs along the bottom foreground. Overhead, a vast, overcast sky is filled with textured grey and white cumulus clouds, partially revealing patches of light blue behind them. Faint, horizontal power lines stretch across the lower portion of the cloudy sky just above the field of corn.

Suffolk Skies. Gorgeous... #photography
A tall, steel lattice electricity pylon stands centered in the background of a rural field under a bright blue sky filled with scattered white and light gray clouds. Power lines stretch horizontally across the upper frame, connected to the pylon's metal cross-arms. In the foreground and midground, a dense crop of mature, dry corn stalks with golden-brown, withered leaves and stalks fills the lower half of the image. A few sparse green leaves peek through near the bottom, while the tops of the corn stalks sway slightly against the clear, open horizon.

Now we're getting somewhere. Big Suffolk Constable skies (and power line obviously). #photography
A low-angle, wide photograph captures a vast field of dry, golden-brown corn crops or tall grass swaying under a dynamic sky. The stalks fill the lower third of the frame, their crisp texture highlighted by bright daylight. Above, a sweeping expanse of deep blue sky is filled with fluffy, white cumulus clouds cast with subtle shadows. Several thin, dark power lines stretch horizontally across the middle of the frame, bisecting the cloudy sky above the horizon. The bright sunlight creates a sharp contrast between the earthy tones of the dry vegetation and the cool hues of the open sky.
