Anyone interested in a sustainable peace in the region needs to engage with how to remove various destabilising actors from the board.

Netanyahu is a malign disaster who needs to be toppled. The IDF has to be pressured to get out of Gaza, Lebanon and Syria. Hezbollah needs to be disarmed and stopped from sabotaging Lebanese society. The IRGC's fall would be a contribution to regional stability, as would defeating the Houthis

I'm also a little bit baffled at what is soft or vague about describing Israeli government actions as war crimes going back in a continuity to Sabra and Shatila

Agree here, and having just blocked three dozen clearly American QT accounts who are projecting their domestic US ideological obsessions on a wider world whose details they are not interested in, I suspect this dysfunctional discourse will continue for some time

If you spent a little time paying attention to the sheer carnage inflicted by the IRGC and Hezbollah on the Syrian people in the 2010s then you might have noted how far it is possible to condemn Israel war crimes without embracing an Iranian political system that pursues fascistic sectarianism

Yet this became transposed into a willingness among particular strands of the Left (and Far Right) to downplay mass murder committed by the Assad regime against its own people in the 2010s or the brutal sectarian reactionaries that lead the Houthis now

Yet of all discourses that reduce dynamics in MENA and global politics to specific preoccupations in parts of the Left the two that baffle me most is how you had some in EU/UK and US cheering on a psychotic autocracy under Assad in the 2010s and sectarian reactionaries like the Houthis in the 2020s

The Oct 7 attack by Hamas was a horrific act against Israelis that made everything worse for Palestinians, the Israeli government committed war crimes, Hezbollah is a fascistic organisation that exploits its community, the IRGC feeds off endless war at home and abroad All these things are true

That substantial portions of the European and US Left struggle with the idea that it is possible to condemn criminal actions by the Israeli government while also condemning the vicious brutality of Hamas, Hezbollah and the Iranian regime continues to baffle me.

What if societal discontent reaches far beyond just a specific kind of industrial workforce? What happens if state actors in a hostile power take actions that deliberately destabilise your economic model even if you stick to free market principles? You are ignoring quite a few variables here

In a world in which business and state power is intertwined and secured through military power those many thousands of global interconnections involve complex intersectiond between state and corporate realms. To emphasise business over the state in how these flows work is also a form of simplism

There is a hangover from the 1990s in how too much geoeconomic analysis takes the geopolitical and domestic political foundations needed to get trade and growth for granted. Which means trade debate keeps getting blindsided by what is obvious to anyone working on border policing or military strategy

As we are reminded around the Gulf, Indian Ocean and South China sea, this economically interdependent world requires constant military and policing resources operating on a vast scale as a matter of routine to function. And to sustain that power requires military covenants and social contracts

The message Labour, Grüne, Linke, PSOE, PD and the rest of European Socialism and Social Democracy need to ram home is without social security there is no military security Welfare systems aren't bleeding business, they're underpinning social stability and military power needed for trade and growth

It is why a 1990s reflex among economic liberals and much of the Right to pit social security against national security is not just shortsighted but also historically ignorant. As states discovered between 1914 and 1945, without loyal citizen soldiers who feel cared for a modern military loses wars
2395
Alexander Clarkson @aphclarkson.bsky.social · 16h
A world in which societies can only remain stable with much higher levels of military and civil defence capacity than anticipated in the 1990s is going to involve a much wider degree of state intervention in the economy and efforts to sustain a social contract that secures the loyalty of citizens

There is a lesson here about how people respond when they are called lazy, workshy or hypochondriacs by those meant to represent them, and when every 'reform' is a cut to public services or an attack on people’s quality of life (particularly for families and workers).

Indeed, and to your point about discipline, Merz has no authority. I think when Jens Spahn suffered no consequences for the various fiascos from his time as health minister, it was a signal that CDU was cooked. It doesn’t help that SPD’s strategy is “be the most milquetoast.”
