Liverpool has joined Manchester in reversing the disastrous legacy of bus deregulation and privatisation It is time to change the game entirely. Our public services, including our local buses, should be run in public ownership - for the public good, not private profit
Quote from Steve Rotheram's Guardian article: "For decades, we were told that privatisation would deliver better services. The experience of millions of passengers tells a different story...Now we have a Labour government bringing our railways back into public ownership and giving local leaders more power over the essentials that ordinary people depend on."

Took my brother and 11 & 8 year old nephews around Leicester on their bikes. My brother was really impressed with the infra and bike park as they have nothing like that in Aylesbury. The 8 year old said he felt safe riding around Leicester. @rideleicester.bsky.social are removing the barriers!

🌡 Temperatures are soaring and so are fossil fuel profits. While we struggle through record heat, TotalEnergies is busy celebrating huge payouts with its shareholders. Profits made by fuelling exactly the kind of heatwaves tens of millions of people are living through right now 🤡 [1/]

It's the UK local elections this Thursday, 7 May. Please vote if you can.
Cartoon showing six numbered doors, with windows next to each. Six people are visible, saying the following things:

“I can’t be bothered to vote”
“My vote doesn’t count in any case”
“I don’t see the point in voting to be honest”
“What difference would my vote make?”
“My vote wouldn’t change anything anyway”
(With ‘Vote extremist party’ poster in the window) “I’ll be voting”

It’s not about ditching the car, just making smarter swaps where you can. With fill-ups now £87–£105 😅, those short “I’ll just drive” trips? They add up. Swap a few for a bike = less fuel, less wear, no parking. 👉 It all stacks over time: cyclinguk.org/financial-benefits

For environmental reasons I want to use trains wherever possible. But why am I paying double or triple the cost of petrol to not get a seat and stand on an non air conditioned train for two+ hours sweating my balls off. This is an utterly ridiculous system.

It's weird how a significant proportion of British people despise people on benefits who are apparently sponging off the state, but love millionaires who live offshore to avoid contributing to the economy.

Connecting active travel and public transport opens up communities. Cycle from home to the bus stop, then bus into town is ideal. Or as I do with Luke; cycle into Leicester then bus out to his school. Secure cycle storage is key in connecting travel. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

It's not a "side hustle", it's a second job. And it wouldn't be necessary if the economy wasn't so totally fucked that it's no longer possible to live off the earnings from one job.

You should have to retake your driving test every 10 years. Would cut bad driving habits and keep people up to date with Highway Code changes. The demand for tests would create more jobs. The inevitable number of failures would force investment in better public transport.

Cycling and walking could help deliver almost everything Brits say they want to achieve in 2026 — if we design streets to support them. Getting fitter, losing weight, being healthier, saving money; enabling active travel quietly does all of it. With no gym contracts.

Look, you can have low taxation or you can have functioning public services. You can't have both. Lots of people, including the UK government, seem to have forgotten this fact. Taxation isn't theft. It's the foundation of society.

So much of our infrastructure, planning, environmental, and road safety measures seem to be based around politicians' fear of slightly inconveniencing easily-angered motorists. Pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users are barely considered in their calculations.

This is a massive barrier to me considering an EV. Where would I charge it and would it be expensive at a public charging point? Those who live in properties with no ability for home charging are currently severely disadvantaged. Good to see the balance shifting.

The Cycling, Walking and Wheeling Forum is for everyone in Leicestershire
As a council, supported by Active Travel England, we are reaching out to our communities and stakeholders in the world of active travel. We want to hear from the many individuals, advocacy groups, residents, and professionals with a keen interest in active travel to ensure the schemes we introduce are effective and useful.

We want the Cycling, Walking and Wheeling Forum to be accessible to everyone, which is why we stage the Forum as an in-person and online event.

The evidence in favour of 20 mph speed limits is overwhelming, cheaper insurance, less emissions, less car crashes, it saves the NHS, Police and councils money. But Gary from Port Talbot's commute now takes 42 minutes instead of 40 so it simply must go.

Good deed of the day done! A parent was taking her kids to school, her eldest son was getting a croggy on the mum's bike and her youngest child was on her own bike. But she had stopped. Mum was about 25 metres up the road trying to call her daughter. Child refusing to ride. I stopped, gave encouragement to the child, and then we had a race to the mum! Girl was laughing as she was racing. Fixed her brake levers and then cycled alongside giving encouragement. Child gets to school. I don't care I was a bit later to work, this was worth it.

Your annual reminder to watch for cyclists. This time seven years ago I was lying in the road after a motorist pulled out in front of me and then braked. With nowhere to go I hit the back of the car. There is still slight numbness underneath my right nostril.
