lol in berkeley postdocs unionized ten years ago. now everyone in the staff has a right to parental leave. people are happier, they seek mentors and thrive in science without their “master” (actual wording in the piece fml)

Join us in celebrating Hakyung Lee, Adway Gupta, Paula-Marie Ivey, and Mythili Surendran—this year’s winners of the 2026 Berkeley Lab Research SLAM! Congratulations to all 12 finalists who took the stage! @biosci.lbl.gov @als.lbl.gov @molecularfoundry.lbl.gov slam.lbl.gov
The image displays the 2026 Award Winners for a science competition. First Place is awarded to an individual for "The Picky Metal-Shopping Bacterium." Second Place goes to another for "Ions in Batteries: The More the Merrier?" Third Place is claimed by a person for "X-rays: Connecting Invisible Dots to Unlock Discovery." The People's Choice award is given for "Quantum Computing's Dirty Secret." The background features elements reminiscent of a popular video game, and a "Berkeley Lab Researchers SLAM" logo is at the bottom.

Three years ago tonight, I was in the presence of the most remarkable supercell thunderstorm that I have ever had the privilege of witnessing. For over an hour, I watched it dance beneath the starts, spinning like a top. Mother nature will never cease to amaze, inspire, and humble me.

In the past few weeks, I got to observe a few people on the verge of addiction to AI: spending tokens on agents and anxiously wait for the answer as if they were slot machines — and never knowing when to stop. Scary slop machines

A beamline technician would be something in between a beamline scientist (they conduct the experiments of users) and a scientific engineering associate (they build the mechanics). Synchrotrons tend to require many subject matter experts (for safety, integration), which is different from tabletop exp

I wonder if that would be way to bring a little bit of synchrotron into quantum — the Bluesky ecosystem is maturing and in principle available everywhere. Deployment was an issue, but coding agents made things much smoother

That’s what we did with blop, though manually. We’re also developing agents to run beamline experiments from a prompt. And soon we’re combining the two!

I think it’s where the world is headed — more efficient instrument controls that really let you do what you want. Combined with LLM coding it’s a powerful combination (it becomes easy to implement ideas)

Things are moving forward. We’re trying to bring bluesky everywhere at the ALS, even in metrology, and helping BELLA with their deployments. We’re in teasingly thinking about digital twins. I enjoyed when we worked together, and sometimes I feel we were five years too early

Republican elected officials, particularly Rand Paul and Ron Johnson, are a disgrace. Aside from their repeated attacks on Dr. Fauci, I ask you this: Who in their right mind will ever try to lead an American pandemic response again if the consequence is being harassed for the rest of your life?

California produced over half its May electricity from solar, a world record
New batteries to store solar electricity and low demand in May both contributed to high percentage of electricity that came from solar.
