The rumors are true, I did not go to Oxford. Everything I know about the sea I learned from Moby Dick. | I work in books.

Feel like I need to take a break from socials for a few days just to stop seeing endless things about misogyny and sexual violence for a minute. Comes at a time when the book I’m currently reading has also had no new words so far, but I’ll pop in if that changes. Stay safe out there

Reading about meta glasses cases… is there a name for a maxim like “if a technology can be used to harass women, it will be”

I’m going to start a list of words I’m learning from reading here’s the first one. Sorry I'm not logged in to the OED on my phone so this is what we’re working with
A screenshot of the dictionary definition of picayune which is first definition: a Spanish half real piece formerly current in the south OR something trivial. Second definition: of little value, paltry, petty or small-minded

Btw this is also why the “humanities are cheap” argument for funding never works. It has never worked. We need to stop using it. Nobody you’re trying to convince cares.

The most interesting thing for Natalie Portman to do would be to release a book that’s a thinly veiled portrait of Rachel Cusk. I think that would be good, on balance, for literature.

The loss of search structure is devastating for knowledge retrieval. I teach basic lit searching and it's always felt like a really core transferable skill for students to know boolean operators and "exact phrase searching" and now google, microsoft etc have just killed it to force us to use slopAI.

Exactly this. You need more people. And you need to teach writing (and by extension reading) through your research topics. But this is precisely the labour fight we're losing (or maybe have lost already).

our entire global financial system is currently leveraged to the hilt on the premise that it was good and right for a small cadre of US companies to steal all of the intellectual work ever produced by humanity and sell its back to us without credit or remuneration to the authors (plagiarism)

There are three options really. 1) Make sure they aren't being used illicitly by making the data stream constantly accessible by law enforcement/private companies. 2) Stop children going out in public. 3) (With the obvious exception of people with visual impairment) make smartglasses illegal.

I was reading about contactless payments on Paris public transport and multiple sources framed it as for tourists. But easier l is easier for everyone. And if you already have a card You aren’t getting another plastic card that’s transport specific which surely is good for the environment

"This uncertainty about the human provenance of text is an incalculable loss"
This uncertainty about the human provenance of text is an incalculable loss. In both classical and Christian philosophy, the human being was distinguished by his unique relationship to the word. Machines that have command of language are therefore nothing like the mere next step after the microwave and the calculator. The idea that for the rest of my life I will never know for sure if a text was written by the human who claims it or by a machine saddens me greatly, and I suspect this reality will cast a pall over all our lives once it sets in more generally. As things stand, we will face, every day, a task presented to us that no previous human ever could have contemplated: the task of sussing out whether the text we are looking at had a human behind it. This is a huge “transaction cost” that our new technology has imposed on us all, an unwelcome introduction of doubt and wariness and suspicion into the fundamentals of our life together that will only reduce trust and increase atomization.

It seems like instead of getting mad at Americans (something ac something) people in the UK could get mad at their government and also city councils to pressure legitimate changes that will provide long-run support during heat waves. May even also be able to do this online

It strikes me that some people seem to be equating social media and phone use. How will young people talk to their friends if they’re not on social media? Presumably in a group text like everyone else, etc.

this is unsustainable
Inequality is hardly a new feature in America. But the explosion of wealth at the very top is without precedent in U.S. history. At the height of the Gilded Age at the end of the 19th century, the richest handful of Americans had a net worth equivalent to about 3 percent of the country's annual economic output, according to data compiled by the French economists Gabriel Zucman and
Emmanuel Saez. Today, the fortunes of the same 0.00001 percent — about 20 individuals — make up roughly four times as large a share, equivalent to 12 percent of annual output.

when you understand Tilly Norwood as tech demo first, you have to ask, what is being demonstrated? what is its real purpose and value in the marketplace? the idea that this would be "the next movie star" is a con. a marketing tool to raise capital interest in the potential of the underlying tech.

I think some of the reason why price caps are able to float rhetorically right now is that consumers know they’ve been gouged not just by market circumstances beyond eg a manufacturer‘s control but also by companies going for record profit because they know they can gouge

Personal bugbear but I wish people would stop calling them “hallucinations”. It’s propaganda to humanise AI and suggest it has sentience. These are errors we wouldn’t accept in any other tech product. Imagine saying your SatNav “hallucinated” a road through someone’s house.
