Not *the* Iain MacDonald: just another Iain MacDonald. Outer Hebridean Inner Londoner. Harmonising with The Everly Brothers. One man's civilisation is another man's jungle. You might as well laugh - you won't get your money back. Also @ukcovidghostsigns

Not exactly the same, but I like romcoms, and a combination of that and resolving to read books by people I enjoyed on social media led me to confirm through experience that - shock horror - books dismissed as 'chicklit' are excellent and can be enjoyed by both men and women.

It will never not be wild to me that the Russians attacked Keir Starmer's home, successfully spread falsehoods about Starmer's love life, and this didn't changed British politics and British political elite behaviour *at all*.

Early Beatlemania was fuelled by teenage girls, but they won't tell you that.

Women and girls have always been the trendsetters and the tastemakers.

Many tales of school assemblies arising. We never had such a thing as school assemblies where I grew up, so no stories to tell; I'd say I felt deprived, but given some of these stories, maybe not so much. #coolstorybro

My bus stopped next to a day nursery playground for a couple of minutes, and watching the staff and children over the wall from the top deck it looked like a happy world and a dream job. For that couple of minutes, at least.

"Girl with the pearl earring" flashed into my mind this morning, when I accidentally recreated it in a moment I'm calling "Old man with the urticaria tries to see the hives on his back in a mirror". I will not be painting it at this time. Or any other time.
Famous painting referred to.

I hadn't noticed this, but completely on board with it. I never take in any physical character description, unless the author hammers an element home for plot reasons, and just picture them in my own way, which is generally something equal or very close to 'not at all'. Not sure how that works, tbh.

The story behind 'I Will Survive' was entirely new to me. How meta. (From Simon Napier-Bell's entertaining Substack.)
In fact, her passion to survive didn't actually grow out of a break-up, but from a snapped spine when she fell off stage. After six months in a body cast Polydor threw her a bone with a new single — a clunky disco version of Substitute, an old Righteous Brothers hit. The B side was a song her producer had written that no one wanted. At Studio 54, the DJ preferred it
— and played it.
By the end of 1979 it had been number one across the world and Gloria Gaynor was
immortal.

I turned up for an Easyjet flight to Denmark with what turned out to be an expired passport. The nice lady told me they could change my flight to one to Spain, as I could fly there on an expired passport. But I went back to the passport office, got a new one, and followed my party on a later flight.

I mean it's a slight over-simplification, but yes, that's more or less what transport policy *should* be like and sometimes is, certainly in urban areas.
It’s difficult to avoid the conclusion that the people in charge of transport policy in this country think that private car use is intrinsically harmful, morally suspect, and should be progressively made harder everywhere until it is a marginal mode reserved for specific essential trips.

    David Frost

The anti-car blob is out of control. It’s trying to make driving impossible

Motorists are crying out for a political party brave enough to fight back against the transport bureaucracy and its charity offshoots

We Have Ways podcast tells me that from the start to the end of the Second World War, Britain went from producing a tenth of its own food to producing nine-tenths of its own food. Remarkable, or only possible, during a war (probably both).
